Art Elective Programme

What is it?

The Art Elective Programme (AEP) is designed to enable students with artistic abilities to undertake a challenging Art programme. It aims to develop students’ conceptual and analytical faculties by placing equal emphasis on both the practical and theoretical aspects of Art. Students are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings and ideas through a variety of art practices. Students also develop skills to make critical judgements about artworks and art practices through the study of visual arts.

The AEP is a four-year course that prepares students for the GCE ‘O’ Level Higher Art Examination. Students selected for the AEP will take Higher Art in place of Design & Technology and Food & Consumer Education at the lower secondary level. In the mainstream schools, AEP students are expected to complete the four-year course and offer Higher Art as a subject for examination at the GCE 'O' Level Examination.

What is the criteria?

To qualify for the AEP, the students must first meet the entry requirement of the Express course. Upon admission to the school, the students must apply for the programme at the school and must pass an internal AEP Selection Test set by the school.

Please note the following:

Higher Art in the GCE ‘O’ Level Examination is equivalent to a Humanities subject. Students who offer Higher Art will be allowed to use the Art grade as a Humanities subject grade for admission to JC/MI. Due to the nature of the subject, AEP will not be offered with Triple Science, Computing, Malay Special Programme, Full History, Full Geography and English Literature at upper secondary.

UOB Gold.mov

Our ex-Zhonghuarian, Sasha Liman Susanto (4E2'19) has done us proud by winning the Gold Award (Emerging Artist Category) in the 2020 UOB Painting of the Year Competition. Her submission titled "8 Years Old" captures her childhood memories of her pet and through her painting, and she hopes to remind all to treasure quality time with family. Sasha's passion for and talent in art were further developed when she went through the Art Elective Programme during her time at Zhonghua Sec. Congrats, Sasha!

Our current Sec 3 AEP student, Ng Shi Ying (3E2'21), is also one of the Artistic Excellence Prize Winners in the 2021 National Children and Youth Art Competition - Courage, Hope and Love in the time of a pandemic. Her artwork titled "To the light" captures her interpretation on how one seeks freedom by swimming from the depths and darkness of the pressure of life and its setbacks, to a lighter and happier part of life full of possibilities and freedom. Congrats, Shi Ying!
