The school rules is a set of behaviour norms that is expected of all students of Yuhua Secondary School. It is established to develop positive behaviour and attitudes so that Yuhuans embody the school values and uphold the good image of the school. The school rules also forms a safe and conducive environment where every member of the school community can thrive in.
RESPECT FOR NATION & COMMUNITY
All Yuhuans must stand at attention during the flag-raising and pledge-taking ceremony. Students who are Singapore Citizens must sing the National Anthem and take the Pledge with the right fist placed over the heart.
Students who are non-citizens must stand still and remain quiet.
RESPECT FOR SCHOOL AND MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY
Yuhuans must stand at attention and sing the School Song when the School Flag is raised.
Yuhuans must wear the prescribed School Uniform for all school-related activities including any activities during the school vacation. Modification to the uniform in any way is not allowed.
Yuhuans must be polite and exhibit gracious behaviour at all times.
Yuhuans must behave in a way that respects the rights and, physical and emotional safety of others.
Yuhuans must respect the property of others and should not be found taking the property of others without permission.
Yuhuans must respect the school premises by keeping the learning environment such as classrooms, and public areas clean at all times and refrain from littering.
RESPECT FOR SELF
All students are expected to uphold high standards of personal grooming and hygiene by adhering to the following:
School Uniform – Yuhuans are ambassadors of the school, and they should wear the school uniform with pride, befitting of self and school.
Yuhuans are to wear the prescribed school uniform and modification of the uniform is not allowed.
Yuhuans must report for morning assembly in formal school uniform on all Mondays.
Yuhuans are given the option to wear the half school uniform (navy blue school polo t-shirt with their school pants or skirts) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Yuhuans must wear the navy blue polo t-shirt to report for all Form Teacher Time/ Interaction during Home Based Learning (HBL) days.
The school polo t-shirt and black shorts should be worn for PE lessons only.
Only school approved t-shirts can be worn for school events. Home clothes are not allowed for school events, unless special permission is given.
Only plain white t-shirt/singlet is allowed to be worn underneath the school uniform.
Boys: Long pants are to be worn at waist level. Tapered / baggy pants are not allowed.
Girls: Skirts should be of knee-length.
Yuhuans are reminded that cardigans/ jackets/ sweaters are not part of the school uniform and can only been worn when permission is granted. (e.g. permission granted to be worn in air-conditioned rooms). Only plain coloured jackets (without designs) are allowed to be worn if permission is granted. Pullover sweaters/hoodies are not allowed.
Yuhuans must be in proper footwear at all times when in school: plain black canvas shoes with black laces, or plain black sports shoes worn with plain white, or school socks covering the ankles. Sandals or slippers are not allowed unless supported by a medical certificate.
Student Councillors should wear the Student Leader collar badge while on the school premises and when attending external programmes. Collar badges for CCA groups should be worn on the right collar only.
Yuhuans are to note that the above-mentioned uniform rules are also to be observed during weekends and term holidays.
Personal Appearance and Grooming – Yuhuans should take pride in looking smart and dignified with proper grooming.
Hair
Hair must be in its natural colour and must not be dyed or highlighted. Yuhuans should maintain school-appropriate haircut/hairstyles.
Yuhuans should refrain from having heavily-gelled hairstyles or outlandish hairdos such as side shaved/ high fade/ undercuts with thick top/long tops/ pompadour.
Hair extensions are not allowed.
Face
Face is to be free of any form of cosmetics. This includes accessories e.g. extended eye lashes.
Eyebrows are to be free of shaping/drawing.
All male Yuhuans must be clean-shaven - sideburns, moustaches and beards are not allowed.
Fingernails
Fingernails must be kept short and clean. All forms of nail polish or varnish are not allowed.
Accessories
Accessories such as necklaces, wristbands, bracelets, tongue studs and rings are strictly prohibited.
Only plain/black spectacle frames and watch straps are allowed. Spectacle frames should be of a reasonable size.
Coloured and other forms of cosmetic-enhancing contact lenses, with the exception of transition lenses, are not allowed.
Tattoos and henna drawn on the body are not allowed. Yuhuans will not be allowed to attend school until the tattoos and henna are removed.
All other forms of body piercing are not allowed. Excessive piercings/ studs/ sticks will be confiscated and disposed of.
Attendance and Punctuality – Being present and punctual is the most basic form of respect. Yuhuans who are regular and punctual send across a message of being responsible, gracious and humble.
All Yuhuans must attend and be punctual for all lessons, co-curricular activities and all school activities.
Yuhuans are expected to be in the parade square / school hall by 7.30 am for the flag raising ceremony/ morning assembly.
Yuhuans are considered late if they fail to attend the flag-raising ceremony and morning assembly by the reporting time, and will be given a Late Pass.
Yuhuans who arrive in school after the commencement of the first lesson will be directed to the General Office to obtain a Late Pass before they are allowed to enter the class. Yuhuans who do not report to the General Office to obtain the Late Pass will be considered as absent for the day.
Yuhuans who come into school later than 8.00 am will have to serve an extended CARE3-in-Action session. Recalcitrant latecomers (later than 8.00 am) may face in-house suspension.
Yuhuans must inform their form teacher(s) if they are unable to attend school or school activities. Yuhuans must produce a medical certificate immediately on the school day after the day of absence, failing which he/she will be considered absent without valid reason.
A letter of explanation for each day of absence from the parent or guardian may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. The school will accept a maximum of four letters of explanation from the parent or guardian for absences in a semester.
Yuhuans who are absent for common tests or examinations must submit a valid medical certificate to his/her form teacher on his/her return to school. Yuhuans who fail to submit a valid medical certificate will be issued ‘0’ or ‘Absent’ and disciplinary measures will be taken.
Yuhuans who need to leave school during curriculum time for valid reasons such as medical appointment are required to obtain a ‘Permission to Leave School Early’ form from their Form Teacher or the General Office. Approval from the Principal/Vice-Principal/Head of Department is required. Parents will be informed by the teacher or the office.
Yuhuans are not allowed to leave Singapore during school term time. An official written request must be made to the Principal to seek prior approval before confirmation of the trip. Absence without approval will be marked as ‘Absent without Valid Reason’.
Yuhuans who fall ill or are unwell during school hours may seek permission for early departure from school. All Yuhuans seeking early departure must be accompanied home by the parent or guardian. If the parent/guardian is not available, Yuhuans will not be allowed to leave school until the official dismissal time. They will rest in the Sick Bay until their parent or guardian arrives to fetch them or until dismissal time.
All students are expected to maintain at least 90% attendance rate. Students who consistently absent themselves through wilful truancy (i.e. absent without valid reasons) may not be allowed to sit for examinations and to promote to the next level of study.
Parents/Guardians of students who consistently absent themselves through wilful truancy will be engaged at significant milestones through the year, and students must display commitment to re-engage in studies before being cleared by the School Leaders to sit for examinations.
Yuhuans must inform their CCA teachers if they are unable to attend CCA sessions or activities. Absence from CCA must be supported by a medical certificate or a letter of explanation from their parent or guardian. The school will accept a maximum of three letters of explanation from the parent or guardian for CCA absences in a semester.
A school is a place where teaching and learning take place. Therefore, it is essential for Yuhuans to be responsible learners by being prepared for learning, and take personal pride in building a positive school tone and ensure classroom cleanliness.
PERSONAL LEARNING
Yuhuans must have the following items to be deemed as ready for school:
A school bag that is big enough to fit an A4-sized file
A fully charged Personal Learning Device
A copy of the class timetable
Writing material and/or other learning material required for the day
CLASSROOM
Yuhuans must stand and greet their teachers as a class at the start of each lesson and thank their teachers at the end of each lesson.
Yuhuans must adhere to the class rules and expectations set by the form and subject teachers.
Yuhuans must take pride in their work and show total commitment in producing and submitting quality assignments promptly, so that they will receive timely feedback for their work to help them improve.
Only plain water may be consumed in the classrooms and other areas outside of the canteen.
Yuhuans should visit the toilets before morning assembly and during recess to minimise disruption to their learning.
Yuhuans must remain in the classroom during change of lessons. They are only allowed to leave the classroom with permission granted by the subject teacher.
Yuhuans must follow the instructions of the class chairperson or student councillors in the absence of a teacher.
Yuhuans must seek permission from the subject teacher if they have a valid reason to leave the classroom during curriculum time. They must obtain a Teacher’s Pass before leaving the classroom and the Teacher’s Pass must be worn at all times. Sharing of a Teacher’s Pass is not allowed.
Yuhuans are encouraged to have their meals or to take a short break during the two breaks in the canteen and not remain in the classroom.
SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT
Yuhuans must keep their classrooms, school premises, learning environment and public areas free from litter, and clean at all times.
Playing of ball games must only take place at the school field or designated courts.
MOVEMENT
Yuhuans must move in a brisk, quiet and orderly manner and be led by the chairperson or subject representative when moving around the school.
Yuhuans are to refrain from running along the corridors.
Yuhuans must make use of the designated pedestrian crossing for their personal safety and that of others.
Yuhuans can only enter special rooms such as computer laboratories, multi-purpose rooms, EMP room, Food Laboratories, Design and Technology workshops, Electronics Room, Science laboratories, Gym and the Indoor Sports Hall under the supervision of a teacher or staff.
Yuhuans who cycle must stop at the school gate and push their bicycles to the bicycle rack.
CANTEEN
Yuhuans are to queue in an orderly manner to buy food and drinks.
All purchased food and drinks must be consumed within the canteen. Any purchased food and drinks found outside the canteen will be confiscated and disposed of.
Only plain water may be consumed in the classrooms and other areas of the school.
Yuhuans must keep the canteen clean and return used crockery and utensils to the receptacles provided.
Yuhuans must not loiter at void decks, shopping malls and other public places in their school uniform.
Yuhuans must be well behaved and socially responsible in public.
Yuhuans are expected to show respect to all members of the public.
Yuhuans must act in a responsible and appropriate manner when using technology for school-related activities.
Use of Mobile Devices and Electronic Gadgets
The school is a place for learning,the building of knowledge and understanding. As such, the use of personal and non-PDLP devices (e.g. mobile phones) or electronic gadgets are not allowed during curriculum time, CCA sessions, learning journeys as well as enrichment and academic support programmes, except under the instruction of teachers for learning purposes.
Personal Learning Devices (PLDs) are devices meant to be used for learning purposes only. Games, social media and communications apps (e.g. Telegram or WhatsApp) are not permitted to be run on the PLDs.
Yuhuans must ensure that mobile phones and electronic gadgets are switched off and kept securely in their lockers throughout the school day.
Yuhuans can use their mobile phones only in the school canteen at designated time-slots: before school, and after school. Mobile phones will be confiscated if they are used beyond the designated space and time. Failure by any student to comply will be seen as open defiance and result in disciplinary consequences.
Yuhuans who need to use their mobile phones because of personal reasons must seek permission from their teachers before doing so.
Consequence for misuse
1st offence: A verbal warning will be issued. Unauthorized applications in PLDs must be deleted on the spot.
2nd offence: Device to be confiscated until the end of the school day.
3rd offence: Device to be confiscated until the end of the next school day.
4th offence and beyond: Device to be confiscated for 10 school days, and parents will need to meet with school management before the collection of the device from school. Further offences may result in more serious consequences, upon discussion with parents.
Use of Electronic Devices with Recording functions (e.g. cameras, video cameras, mobile devices with camera features)
Yuhuans can only take photographs or conduct recording (sound/video) in the school premises and during school activities with the permission of a teacher.
Even if permission is granted to use the photography or recording functions in electronic devices, Yuhuans must seek consent from their schoolmates or teachers before taking their photographs, sound recordings or videos.
Use of School’s ICT Equipment
Yuhuans are allowed to loan ICT equipment from the ICT Service Centre (iSEC) for learning purposes. Yuhuans must take good care of the school’s ICT equipment and not damage or lose it. Yuhuans and their parents/guardians will bear the cost of repairs or replacements in cases of damage or loss due to negligence.
Yuhuans must report any hardware or software faults to their teachers.
Yuhuans must not attempt to download, install, connect or use any unauthorised software or hardware, including games, onto the school’s learning devices.
Consequences
Yuhuans must abide by the aforementioned conditions, failing which the school will take necessary actions to re-direct Yuhuans towards the responsible use of technology which may include confiscation of devices, loss of usage privileges for a period of time, supervised use of devices, referral to the Police or other enforcement agencies.
Yuhuans should not bring expensive items (e.g. headphones, watches), valuables or large amounts of cash to school.
Yuhuans must not bring to school any item which either constitutes a threat to the safety of others or a distraction to others.
Yuhuans are not allowed to have in their possession any weapon, or weapon-like item, which can be used or intended to be used to cause harm to others.
The Conduct Grade will be reflected in Yuhuans’ Progress Reports. Table 1 below shows the marks and the corresponding Conduct Grades.
The computation of the total score takes into consideration three components:
a) Personal Qualities or PQ (50%): The personal qualities, at 50%, constitutes the highest weighting of the Conduct Grade. Yuhuans will be assessed on how their conduct exemplifies the school values by their form teachers. See table 1 below a more detailed description of the various achievement levels. The achievement for each of the value will be converted into a score and aggregated to compute the overall PQ score.
b) Attendance during CCA (15%): Yuhuans without CCA will be awarded 0% for CCA attendance. It is mandatory to participate in at least one CCA.
c) Demerit points (35%): The tiered offence table provides an indication of the demerit points for certain offences and is not meant to be exhaustive. The award of demerit points may be adjusted according to the severity and frequency of the offence.
