Sensory bottles are often referred to as “Calm Down Bottles”. When a sensory bottle has items such as glitter, water beads, or rubber bands in it that move slowly, children (and adults) are often mesmerized watching their slow descent which provides a visual sensory for our brain. This will aid in slowing one’s reaction/symptoms such as intense breathing, racing heart rate, volatile thoughts and charged emotions, etc.
Instructions:
1) Use the empty lid-tight bottle provided.
2) Prepare the items to be put inside the bottle. (E.g. you can try glitters, coloured bands, sand, flakes, water beads provided in the pack.)
3) Into the empty bottle, filled 3/5 up with water.
4) Add in the beautiful items into the bottle for visual sense. (Amount is subjective to your preference., but take care not to fill too much, so that the items have space in the bottle to descend)
5) Fill up the rest of the bottle with glue. You can stop at any point. It does not have to be filled to the brim.
6) Cover with the lid to ensure it is tight. Shake up the bottle and let it mix. Enjoy the visual sensory of its descent.
We highly recommend you to use the sensory bottle along with some muscle relaxation technique or deep breathing techniques as you calm and regulate your child while looking at its descent.
It is important to start each day with a positive thought as this thought can stay with your child for the rest of the day. Focusing on a positive thought can help your child feel happier and calmer, having a good locus of control.
Instructions:
1) Prepare a blank piece of colour or plain A4 paper.
2) Have your child think of every sentence starting with “I” or “I AM” and shortlist 5 sentences for your child that can include their strengths, interests, likes, positive experiences.
3) Your child can approach another friend or family member to tell him/her 3 other sentences about themselves.
4) Gather these sentences and start on the “I AM” poster.
5) Design, colour and beautify the poster.
6) You may wish to frame it up or stick it around your child favourite corner to remind them of Who they are.
