Theme: "Blended Learning - A continuation"
Dreaming and Delivering on Physics Education in Singapore, with a special focus on blended learning and e-pedagogy
A virulent pandemic. Inexorable climate change. Humanity has grown increasingly conscious of our limitations in the recent years. We are a species existing within the fragile biosphere of Earth, yet our ambitions and recklessness threaten the sustainability of our own longer-term survival.
Our challenges as a civilisation might appear qualitatively different to those faced by cave-people from millennia ago staring down predators, pestilence, and poverty. But many basic principles still apply. We seek to understand our place in the world. We model and imagine the consequences of events and actions. We develop technologies to amplify our abilities and impact, and struggle to mitigate the unintended consequences.
To survive on this planet, we needed to appreciate energy and forces, heat and gravity. Figuring out electric and magnetic phenomena granted us incredible power to influence physical matter. We are carbon-based life-forms with some skills in building silicon-based computing hardware. The rigour of experimental and theoretical physics have established a culture in which revolutions and reinventions were possible — without curiosity and precision, the reality of atoms and quantum would have remained impenetrable mysteries.
Physics is the science of modelling all aspects of our universe. It has provided an immensely successful framework in recent centuries for pushing against the boundaries of the known and the knowable. Future generations will require a working knowledge of the discipline to sustain modern technology, and will require a deep appreciation of its practices and philosophy to power the next revolution.
Our roles as physics educators in the current age could not be more relevant. Let’s share and learn together at IPSG 2022!
