When full HBL was implemented in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation, MOE noted how students became more self-directed and independent in their learning, spurred by circumstances and the use of technology. There was also anecdotal feedback that some students were motivated to explore their personal interests during Home-based Learning (HBL). These are critical dispositions that our students need for the future, in line with MOE’s Learn for Life movement.
MOE’s experiences from HBL have opened up new opportunities to reimagine teaching and learning in the post-COVID19 education landscape and build on the growth that MOE has seen in the students and teachers.
Through Blending Learning, regularly scheduled HBL Days will allow students to take charge of their own learning and discover their interests. For teachers, HBL can be a canvas to innovate, inculcate independence in learning and ignite students’ curiosity.
HBL is part of MOE's broader blended learning initiative to leverage a mix of home-based and in-school activities, both online and offline approaches to learning, to inculcate in students future-ready competencies of self-directedness and independence, passion and intrinsic motivation to learning.
HBL days will be conducted on a regular basis throughout the school year where approximately two days in a month will be set aside for HBL. It is a key feature of the schooling experience introduced in all Singapore Secondary schools and Junior Colleges since 2021.
An example of a learning schedule
All HBL learning activities will be assigned to students via Student Learning Space (SLS). Through SLS, teachers will continue to monitor students' learning and check for understanding so as to provide timely feedback to students during HBL.
Students are expected to complete all learning tasks assigned by the end of HBL day.
Students who do not complete their HBL learning tasks may be asked to return to school (instead of staying at home) to do HBL for subsequent HBL days.
