Mathematics: Mathematics in Real World Context (Time Zones, Currency Exchange, Rate & Discount)

Adopting the Active Learning Process,

[activate learning] students are given the opportunity to role-play in a real-world scenario whereby they are going on a holiday to Korea (some students in the class love K-Drama) to provide authentic learning experiences

[promote Thinking and Discussion] while working in pairs, students will have to discuss, make decision and do some calculation together related to airfares, time zones, money exchange, transport, hotel expenses etc.

[monitor and provide feedback] during which teacher will walk be able to walk to give feedback and support based on their work visible in the Classkick app

[facilitate and demonstration of learning] the lesson will end with a discourse as a class whereby students will demonstrate or consolidate their learning by sharing how they will make decision given another scenario

Design & Technology: Identifying Design Opportunities

Adopting the Active Learning Process,

[activate learning] students are given a video and text (real world context) as stimulus for students to sieve out and identify the needs experienced by the users. (Empathy)

[promote Thinking and Discussion] while working in groups of 3, students will have to discuss and make decisions on the key issues faced by the user/s so as to identify a possible design direction.

[monitor and provide feedback] based on the student input on iPad and their oral suggestions and group explanations, the teacher will provide on the spot feedback to help students converge to a feasible design brief and specifications. Other groups will be encouraged to give feedback too.

[facilitate and demonstration of learning] students will consolidate their learning by recalling the main points from the lesson and be able submit a feasible design brief, specification and tentative idea (Sketch)

Malay Language : Enhancing Formal E-mail Writing Skills

Adopting the Active Learning Process,

[activate learning] Students will be studying the given scenario of issues faced by customers in a supermarket and aim to highlight the situation to the company as well as proposing suggestions with good reasons for the benefit of company and customers.

[promote Thinking and Discussion] While working in pairs, students will have the opportunity to discuss their personal inputs on some areas while brainstorming as a pair on suggestions on how to overcome the issues.

[monitor and provide feedback] Teacher will give comments to students’ inputs and highlight the most appropriate suggestions as a class while encouraging the use of connectors and proverbs to enhance their writing.

[facilitate and demonstration of learning] Students will show the proposed suggestions are supported by valid reasons while drawing connections between the issues and the suggestions to ensure relevancy.

Science (Biology): Problem-based Learning: Protect that Pill

Students will be working in pairs to design a pill coating through experimentation. Prior to this lesson, they have clarified the requirements and made considerations for their pill coating. Students are grouped according to their readiness level (DI).

Each pair is provided with the materials and apparatus for building and testing their pill coating prototypes. Three pieces of Skittle candy represent the medicine that their pill coating needs to protect. They will be creating pill coatings using mixtures of flour, sugar, corn starch and oil. During the prototyping process, students will discover that the different properties of the materials will affect the effectiveness of their pill coatings.

They will be testing out the effectiveness of their pill coating by placing the coated Skittle candy in sparkling water. If the colouring of the Skittle candy leaks into the sparkling water within 2 minutes, the pill coating is deemed ineffective.

Students will make conclusions about the effectiveness of their pill coatings after testing out their prototypes.

Key Application of Technology:

Use of Classkick for the purpose of learning together, providing differentiated instructions and collaboration within groups (two students in a pair will be accessing the same worksheet on Classkick).
