Mr Ang's Teaching & Learning Philosophy
"You determine your destiny... Keep an open mind 🧠 and an open heart ❤️ , and explore how Science relates to you on a personal level! Be curious, explore, practice, find the key 🔑 to unlock your potential!"
Classroom Rules & Routines (3Ps & 2As)
Rationale: Classroom time is precious! Leaving the class physically or mentally will mean loss of time where important stuff to be learnt!
Punctuality: Come punctually (no later than 5 mins after lesson starts). Those that are late should stand at front door and ask for permission before entering.
Preparation: All relevant lesson materials and writing materials of the day should be prepared before greeting! Be aware of instructions on Google Classroom or WhatsApp chats, especially if there are pre-readings or homework to be done.
Participation: All students should be participative in class. Any talking or chatter in class should be productive and constructive chatter (no one should be talking about other things apart from Science)
Attentive: All students should be attentive in class. When Mr Ang is sharing important points, talking should cease and all attention should be towards the front.
Accountability: All students should take account for their own learning! These includes:
Going to the toilet or refilling water before or after lessons (during breaks). Permission will be not granted for these requests especially if they could be done with better organisation!
Students should keep a Science file to organise all their work! If any work is lost, it is the responsibility of the student to look for Mr Ang promptly to get replacements
If students are absent, they should check in with Mr Ang or their friends for the things they missed, and refer frequently to the Google Classroom and Learning Portal to obtain all resources!
Homework Rules & Routines (COP)
Rationale: Homework is valuable practice and the rare window of opportunity for Mr Ang to check in on your progress and understanding
Completion: Completion of homework is the most important! Blanks are missed opportunities for learning! Copying is useless!
Homework should always be done by referring to lesson notes and other relevant resources (e.g., BSQs, Quizlets)!
If unsure of any questions, ask! Always ask Mr Ang (personally or through pm), or ask your friends for help!
If you are completely lost, immediately ask for consults! You should also at least highlight or annotate the question at the minimum!
Originality: Originality of homework is the second most important! Your own work (not your friend's work), is a reflection of your learning!
Integrity is important! Your work and the effort that comes with it is a reflection of your character!
If you received help from your friends, always attempt the questions on your own again to reinforce your own learning!
Punctuality: Punctuality of homework is strongly encouraged! Punctuality prevents work from piling up (snowballing) and provide Mr Ang the window to give you feedback promptly
All work should be submitted on the deadline!
In the event where you are unable to finish your work, inform Mr Ang early and propose a new deadline! If not, it will be by default the 2nd day after the deadline! Any extra time should be used to make sure that the work quality is good.
A grace of maximum 1 week will be given! Any homework past this marker is considered way too late, and it will come with staying back or contact of parents!
The Circle of Trust
Rationale: Every young person (such as yourself) are leaders of today, not tomorrow! You are responsible young adults that should not require much reminders from myself! Whatever you sow, you shall reap (good or bad)!
By default of being my students, all students under me will get my circle of trust!
All issues (regarding the above routines) will be dealt with cordially between the student and myself initially! Mistakes will not be held against you, but there needs to be reflection and correction, with follow-up improvement!
However, a continuous breaking of trust (in terms of frequent breaking of any routines above), can result in the following:
Involvement of Class Mentors (CMs) and CCA teachers
Involvement of Parents
Any consequences of an intensity that matches the required intervention
What you can expect of Mr Ang?
Strong, Detailed Resources: Expect my 200% when it comes to preparation of resources, teaching and lesson prep! Whatever help that I can provide, I shall (e.g., tips and tricks, annotations, detailed explanations). However, it should be accompanied with your own responsibility to keep up your practice!
Conceptual & Experiential Teaching: My lessons involve more discussion, learning experiences and hands-ons, rather than top-down teaching, all centred around concepts! Expect experiments, stories, and other platforms to increase your engagement with Science topics!
Open to Feedback: My classrooms should be as safe and inclusive a learning environment as possible. Work with me to cater lessons to you and to know how you are doing and where you are at. If things are not working for you, feedback to me promptly so that I can help you!
Open-Comms Policy: I’m available to contact anytime, including late nights, weekends and public holidays (only for students). All feedback will be individualised
