A visit to the Former Ford Factory
A visit to the Changi Chapel and Museum
This innovative programme for Secondary 2 students brings together History and Literature to deepen students’ understanding of World War II, beginning with a learning journey to Singapore's historical war sites. Through collaboration between our Literature and History departments, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of Singapore's World War II experience by analysing both historical events and significant war poetry, including Edwin Thumboo's "Adnan & Comrades, Bukit Chandu," Arthur Yap's "The Prisoners," and Henry Treece's "Conquerors."
Analysing the poem, "Adnan & Comrades, Bukit Chandu"
Through the combined study of historical analysis and war poems, students will gain deeper insights into war's impact on society, culture and identity. Guided discussions, presentations and assignments will enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills as they explore themes such as resilience, survival and colonialism. To reinforce their learning, the History department guided students in creating newsletters or scrapbooks to document historical events.
This approach aims to enrich students' understanding of Singapore's past while fostering appreciation for Literature as a historical narrative that offers unique insights into our history.

A visit to Reflections at Bukit Chandu
A visit to Changi Chapel and Museum
The Battle of Bukit Chandu and the stories at Changi Chapel and Museum stand as powerful testimonies to both the horrors of war and the resilience of those who endured it. These historical sites commemorate one of Singapore's fiercest battles and the experiences of Prisoners- of- War (POWs), showcasing extraordinary courage and strength in adversity.
Our History department has created authentic learning experiences aligned with SG60 for Secondary 2 students. Through visits to Reflections at Bukit Chandu and Changi Chapel and Museum, students explore themes of human motivation, responses to adversity, perseverance, and the challenging question of restitution for war victims.
We love studying History!
To deepen learning, we have initiated a collaboration between History and Food and Consumer Education (FCE) department. Students create a 'Wartime Kitchen e-recipe' in a MasterChef-style project, working with their grandparents and seniors through our Intergenerational Learning (IGL) programme to commemorate SG60. This initiative enables meaningful interactions across generations while building historical knowledge through culinary exploration.
Our approach integrates critical thinking and civic literacy throughout these lessons, developing students' understanding of wartime experiences. Through museum visits and engaging primary sources, we demonstrate why these historical events remain relevant today. These authentic experiences bring history to life, fostering deeper appreciation of these significant events and their impact on our present world.
