Where your musical journey begins
Students who demonstrate aptitude and passion in music can further develop their skills by applying to secondary schools through the Direct School Admission (DSA) programme in Performing Arts (Band, Choir, Dance, String Ensemble, Music). DSA through music offers an excellent pathway for young musicians to deepen their musical knowledge, master specialised instruments such as brass (trumpets, trombones), woodwind (clarinets, bassoons), and percussion instruments, and experience the joy of ensemble performance. This programme provides talented students with enhanced musical opportunities and structured pathways to pursue their artistic interests at a higher level. Over the years, we have students who have successfully applied through DSA in Band, Choir and Dance to the secondary schools that offer these various arts forms.
Let's hear from Joie who applied to Swiss Cottage Secondary through DSA in Band in 2024.
Joie graduated from Fuchun Primary School in 2024. She was with Fuchun Brass Band from 2021 to 2024, playing the cornet. She has grown in confidence with the many performing opportunities as well as guiding her juniors in band. Being passionate about music, she decides to pursue her interests further in secondary school.
Joie plays the french horn and is currently a member of the Swiss Cottage Military Band.

The International Dance CCA introduces pupils to a wide genre of dance forms. These include fusions of hip-hop, contemporary, and other genres. The student will be taught to access their emotions and translate them into physical motion, freely with music.
In the process of practising and performing together, our students learn the importance of composure and collaboration, while developing a love for dance and movements with rhythm.
We hope to nurture individual artistic qualities within each child and strive to improve each student's technique and form during the course of learning during the CCA sessions.

Description of CCA
The String Ensemble CCA aims to develop students’ interest and skills in playing the cello and violin through structured and enjoyable learning experiences. Students learn basic techniques, music reading, and ensemble playing, helping them build confidence and a love for music.
Through regular practice, students develop perseverance and resilience as they learn to overcome challenges and improve gradually. They are guided to show integrity by taking responsibility for their instruments, attending practices punctually, and practising honestly.
Ensemble playing nurtures empathy and respect, as students learn to listen to one another, support peers, and work together harmoniously. These experiences strengthen teamwork, communication, and social skills, which are key aspects of MOE’s 21st Century Competencies.
Overall, the Violin and Cello CCA supports the holistic development of students by nurturing musical skills, positive values, and character, while providing meaningful opportunities to perform and contribute to the school community.
