When we read a piece of news or receive information online we should do the following:
First, we must separate facts from opinions.
If it is a fact, we need to verify it.
It it is an opinion, we must consider the other viewpoints that are presented.
What is a Fact?
A fact is a thing that is known to be true.
For example:
-The sun rises every morning.
-Mr Ngai is the Discipline Master of Bendemeer Primary School.
What is an Opinion?
An opinion is a view or thought formed about something which may be true or not. There may not be any evidence available to support it.
For example, opinions can be identified when a person or article mentions that
-Pink is the best colour in the world or
-Noodles is better than rice or use words like
-“I think that…”, “I feel that…”
Let's watch a video on Facts and Opinions 📺
Separating Facts from Opinions 🗂️
Facts are backed by research, numbers and data. There are evidences to support the news or content that we are reading.
Having a picture or video can also help to support a fact, but sometimes, it may be edited.
Opinions, on the other hand, are based on somebody’s feeling and thinking.
