Applied Learning Programme

In AES, students build their confidence and eloquence in speaking through a variety of learning activities, carefully designed with clear learning outcomes for each level, in line with the English Syllabus outcomes at Secondary levels:

The SPEAK programme is designed with clear learning outcomes for students in each level.

SPeak English with grAce and Knowledge (SPEAK)

Here are some samples of students' work from 2019:

SecONDARY 1 (Book Trailers)

In groups, AssumptionKnights produce book trailers with the aim of encouraging others to read. They write their own scripts and set the direction for their trailers, making use of the narrative skills and techniques, as well as articulation strategies taught in class to produce the clips.

Secondary 2 (News Clips)

Taking on roles as news anchors and reporters, AssumptionKnights continue to develop speaking and presentation skills by writing and producing news clips.

Secondary 3 (Campaigns)

As they grow in confidence, AssumptionKnights learn to become convincing advocates for a variety of issues. Secondary 3 seniors take turns to raise awareness for their selected social campaigns during morning assembly and break times, persuading their peers to join them in their cause.

Students who demonstrate strong aptitude and interest for public speaking are given additional opportunities to shine.
ALP- SPEAK

Tier 2 Programmes

Additional platforms and competitions such as the Inter-class Debate Championships and the YMCA Plain English Speaking Awards (PESA) allow eloquent students to engage in intellectual debates with their peers and present their views to a larger audience.

Mathematics: Mathematical Modelling

Kite design & Flying

Using the three phases of learning Mathematics (2020 Mathematics Syllabus, p.137), we motivated our students by providing motivation contexts in the readiness phase and using an activity-based learning approach in the engagement phase.

For the Secondary One students, the highlight activity of the year would be the Kite Design and Flying Task.

They made use of mathematical concepts like angles, shapes and their areas, and physics concepts like drag and thrust to design a kite.

At the end of the project, AssumptionKnights put their creations to the test by flying them on the school field to see whose kite would stay up for the longest time.
