Activity 3: Write sentences and Create a paragraph
Principal of design applied
1) DELETION & MODIFICATION
The material used has too many pictures of animals. Yes, it will help the students to get ideas to write the sentences, but it will confuse them in choosing which one to write about. This will also make the activity too easy for the students to do. There are also some animals they may not know the name of such as Hippopotamus. So, the deletions of some animals in the picture are to make it simpler for the students to comprehend and make it more challenging for them. For instance, the Hippopotamus, some lions, and some Birds.
The picture is blurry making it hard for the students to see and identify the animals. This will affect their ability to construct sentences regarding the picture. Therefore, we will need to modify.
2) LEARNER CENTEREDNESS
The students collaborate with their pairs to create a short story. They can use their prior knowledge regarding wildlife to create their stories. The teacher will only be there to assist if the students ask for it. Therefore, this activity is more about the students' ability to write rather than the teacher-centered.
3) LEARNER-LEARNER INTERACTION.
The students will work together in pairs to write a short story about their trip to the zoo. They will interact with each other by communicating their ideas with one another. This will help create new and fun ideas in their stories. Thus, this shows that there is learner-learner interaction in the activity.
4) LEARNER AUTONOMY
The students have the power to create their own story about their visit to the zoo. They may use their prior knowledge or search for ideas from the internet. This gives them the freedom to choose how their story is going. The teacher will just evaluate their writing skills and not their story. So, this activity embodies the idea of learner autonomy.
Here is the material used for the activity:
1) Pupils will look at the picture that is shown using LCD.
2) The teacher will then divide the class into pairs.
3) Each person has to write 5 sentences about their trip to the zoo in a paragraph. So, a pair has to have 10 sentences in their paragraph.
4) Each pair will take turns to write a sentence.
5) At the beginning, they have to put " I visited the zoo and saw lots of animals...".
6) After finishing their paragraph, they have to put their finished paragraph into the prepared Padlet.
