Introduction

Smart farming is revolutionizing the agriculture industry by leveraging cutting-edge technologies to optimize farming practices. One notable example is SMK Seri Saujana, a school located in Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, which has collaborated with The Faculty of Engineering at Multimedia University (MMU) to embrace smart farming techniques to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.

The available farming system at SMK Seri Saujana is a vertical planting system. The system consists of 4 levels with 10 pots on each level, allowing a total of 40 pots. All 40 pots are placed on top of a water channel. Under each pot, there is a filtering section that allows nutrients or fertilizers to be absorbed into the soil contained in the pot through capillary action. A water pump device in the water channel ensures continuous flow of water in the channel at all times.

SMK Seri Saujana, has integrated advanced technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), sensors, automation, and data analytics into their farming processes. These technologies enable real-time monitoring and control of various parameters such as temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and nutrient levels. By collecting and analyzing this data, teachers and students at SMK Seri Saujana can make informed decisions regarding irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and other critical aspects of farming.

The implementation of smart farming techniques has numerous benefits. It allows for precise resource management, ensuring that water and fertilizers are used efficiently, minimizing waste and environmental impact. Automation reduces labour requirements, making farming operations more cost-effective and less labor-intensive. Additionally, real-time monitoring and early detection of crop diseases or pest infestations enable timely intervention, preventing potential losses and maximizing yields.

SMK Seri Saujana's smart farming initiative not only serves as a learning platform for students but also acts as a model for sustainable and efficient farming practices. By embracing technology and innovation, the school is empowering the next generation of farmers to address the challenges of food security, climate change, and resource scarcity.
