EVALUATION
English Get Smart Plus Year 4 p. 38-39
The content of the textbook is highly relatable to Year 4 pupils, focusing on celebrations (Independence Day), which fits the DSKP's "World of Self, Family and Friends" theme. However, the "Smart Kids" photo story, while engaging, lacks in terms of Independence Day specifications, particularly in the dialogues, which hinder the incorporation of Malaysia's cultural and traditional aspects.
The textbook's structure is clear and modular. Page 38 presents a reading text in photo-comic style, which is followed on page 39 by a reading comprehension exercise. This logical flow from receptive with limited productive skills directly informs the SOW's rigid lesson-by-lesson sequence. This structure reinforces a teacher-centered Learning and Teaching model. While the project (Activity 3) attempts to align with the DSKP's 21st Century Skills, the primary loop is a traditional "read and complete" comprehension check, placing the teacher and textbook as the main sources of knowledge. Furthermore, a āread and completeā task with word banks mainly assesses receptive skills (reading comprehension), with only a slight element of production through word selection. The Language is well-graded to the A1 CEFR level, introducing useful, functional chunks for making suggestions. It also cleverly recycles vocabulary from other units, such as "shopping". Finally, the layout is a significant strength. The use of a bright, colourful "photo-comic" format (p. 38), rather than simple illustrations, is visually appealing and highly motivating for this age group
Overall, the Year 4 English DSKP and textbook provide relevant and structured content that supports language learning among pupils. However, more authentic, student-centred, and culturally rich activities are needed to better meet diverse learnersā needs.Ā
