Experiencing 12 years of teaching Level 1; Year 1 in specific, I found that using technology in my teaching is compulsory. Compared to the years back where I used to print and laminating pictures, using AnyFlip or Canva at most helped saving my time a lot. For the time being, I have been using:
smartTV- for listening activities or exploring further about a certain topic, to give more ideas and examples to the students
microphone and speaker - for speaking activities, to build confidence among students to speak out
Whatsapp - for Language Art activity, pupils share their product of the day when they finish with parents' help.
I am committed to keep up with the more advanced technology available today, however that is the most available and accessible gadget among my students. I see this as a challenge for me to remodel my pedagogy to engage my students further into latest technology.
As it is mentioned before, demographic and geographic background plays a crucial role when it comes to technology implementation at school. Reflecting on my students' background, it seems almost impossible to incorporate any technology without the support from school and community around. in the early years where resources are more restricted, I have seen how the students have evolved in their learning process. Students today are more adequate in using their gadget and they are confidence to explore the internet for further examples. this progress shows that different level of technologies integration plays a crucial part in improving students learning experiences. However, it is also important to make sure that this new era of technology balance the pedagogy and not to distract the student from their learning process.
A flipped classroom is where students learn the core material before coming to class, usually at home through videos or tasks. Then they can use classroom time to discuss, apply, or explore it further with their teacher and classmates. For me, it means giving students a quiet space to prepare first, so they come into class ready to speak up, not to be passive and spoon-fed anymore.
In my opinion, flipped classroom can be applied using technology as what we were taught in this course. However, I do think that it is not necessarily to involve gadget technology. we can also use traditional ''gadget' which is the textbook. As long as they flip the book first at home before coming to school, then it is already a flipped classroom. using tech and gadget or tools are just some ways to make it more fun and interactive.
