Briefing video
Wave is moving energy, sound wave is moving mechanical energy in the form of vibration. At a correct condition, this energy will be superimposed and sound will be amplified. Two sound waves that have the same amplitude and frequency traveling in the opposite direction will superimpose to form a standing wave. We are going to use a PVC pipe (Both End Open) to investigate this effect of acoustic resonance and use it to determine the velocity of sound in the air at room temperature.
To determine the sound velocity in air at room temperature
PVC pipe 3/4 inch - 1 inch
Frequency generator App (App store or Play store)
Measuring Tape
PVC PIPE
FREQUENCY GENERATOR APP
You need to download a frequency sound generator from the App store of Playstore.
Cut the PVC to an appropriate length
Open the app and place the phone speaker close to the opening of the PVC tube
Increase the frequency of the sound generator slowly until a loud sound is heard
An amplified sound will be heard when the sound is in resonance
Find the next resonance frequency harmonics
Record the harmonic number and the frequency in a table
Use appropriate equation graphing tools to analyze your result.
State the significance of your findings.
