All of my desks are in groups of four which naturally lends itself to collaboration. Students ask their peers around them for help when I am working with a small group.
Additionally, my public tracker allows students to see who is in the same lesson as them and/or ahead of them. They can then easily find someone to ask for help. I always push my students to ask a classmate before they ask me a question to ensure that they are depending on each other.
Lastly, I try to utilize the vertical whiteboards a lot where students are in random groups (practice from Building Thinking Classrooms) as a whole class warm-up or closing spiral review activity to ensure students are comfortable with collaborating and know to use the whiteboard space to share their ideas.
One-on-one instruction: I love how much more additional time I have for one-on-one instruction in a Modern Classroom. I am constantly monitoring the public tracker during class and will specifically target students that have a revision but don't necessarily fall into one of my small groups. Of course, I additionally target students who are behind pace. I always try to check in and work one-on-one with each learner in this category during each class. This time may also be used to go over individual trackers and delete anything that’s not a Must Do so that they don’t feel so overwhelmed about getting caught up.
Small group instruction: My small groups are mainly driven based on mastery checks. After each class, I sort students based on specific reteaching that they may need. I make my own notes and try to plan out my time to still allow for those one-on-one check-ins and instructions for students that don’t fall into the small group. Typically I will go over a problem and then have students try a problem on their own before revising their mastery check. Then, they are sent on their own to do the Should Do extra practice and retake.
Whole group instruction: I always plan a whole class review activity before assessments to ensure that I can answer questions as an entire class. Additionally, I try to start or end class with a whole class discovery or spiral review activity that doesn’t depend on where students are in the learning sequence. During this time, I can build an understanding of the material and address any common misconceptions.
I also create an "On-Pace Schedule" that is in my Playlist for students to reference. This lets them know when we have whole-group activities and when soft deadlines and hard deadlines occur.
The best teacher tip that I can give you is not to be afraid to use a public tracker! I was hesitant to use one at first, but it has motivated my students so much because they want to see their own progress in comparison to everyone else’s.
The progress tracker has motivated students in ways I’ve never been able to motivate students other than when a grade is assigned to a task. I love to see them so eager for feedback because of the public tracker! Definitely go check out the Modern Classrooms Auto-Updating Tracker if you haven’t yet :)
I also provide a breakdown of each lesson on my Playlist, including the videos and worksheets learners will need and any extra resources they will use. This helps learners have links to everything they need without making their personal tracker too overwhelming.
