Preceptors are health care providers whose experience and qualifications include the following:
Licensure as a health care provider, credentialed by the state in which they practice (where regulated)
BOC certification in good standing and state credential (in states with regulation) for Preceptors who are solely credentialed as athletic trainers
Planned and ongoing education for their role as a Preceptor
Responsibilities of a Preceptor include:
Remaining current in evidence regarding all domains of Athletic Training practice - including maintaining Contemporary Expertise
Direct supervision of students during clinical education
Instructing & assessing AT student knowledge, skills, and clinical proficiencies
Providing instruction and opportunities for AT students to develop clinical integration proficiencies, communication skills, and clinical decision-making during actual patient/client care as well as assessing these areas of AT practice
Facilitation of the integration of knowledge, skills, and evidence regarding the practice of athletic training
Demonstrate understanding of and compliance with the GATP's policies and procedures
Regular communication with the GATP administration
Verification of student hours and regular completion of clinical evaluations for students assigned to you within Typhon
Discuss/develop goals with the student at the beginning of each rotation and provide feedback on achievement of those goals at the conclusion.
A supervising Preceptor MUST BE within auditory AND visual reach of the student and patient, so that you can intervene on behalf of the patient if needed. If you need to leave the field/court/clinic, the student can either leave the area until the preceptor returns OR they can function only as a CPR/First-Aid-trained individual. If the latter occurs, the student may not utilize AT skills (such as injury evaluation) to determine participation status, modality or rehabilitation prescription, or taping/wrapping (unless involved in emergency care). Breach of this policy may result in disciplinary action on the student and use of the preceptor may be discontinued.
It is the Preceptor's responsibility to provide students with an overview of basic expectations, policies and procedures associated with the clinical site, and mechanisms for effective communication. Preceptors should provide the following information during orientation:
• Preceptor expectations of student
• Critical incident response procedures (for example, Emergency Action Plans)
• Blood-borne pathogen exposure plan and location of sharps and biohazard containers
• Communicable and infectious disease policies
• Documentation policies and procedures
• Patient privacy and confidentiality protections
• Daily routine: start/end times, holiday schedule, professional conduct, how to access the facility
• Intro to facilities, equipment, other institutional personnel
AT facilities, gyms, fields, strength & conditioning facilities, supply/storage room, offices, etc.
Modalities, exercise equipment, first aid supplies, etc.
Team physician(s), coaches, administration, employees
• Discuss/develop professional/clinical goals with the student that are specific, measurable, attainable, reasonable, and time sensitive.
Students should present all concerns, issues, etc., directly related to the assigned preceptor and associated clinical experiences, first to the preceptor if appropriate. If not resolved, the student or preceptor should report the concern to the CEC and/or PD so that a remediation plan can be discussed. If a problem is not resolved using remediation on the student's part, an Athletic Training Review Committee will be formed (consisting of the PD, GATP Medical Director, a GATP faculty member, and a member of the health community). The Committee will review the student's performance (in the presence of the student) and recommend a course of action that may include any of the following: the student is fit and ready to continue, the student should undergo remediation, the student should be dismissed from the GATP.
Typhon is our student hours and evaluation system. As a new Preceptor, you will receive an e-mail from Typhon Group with your log-in information. Please View and Approve Hours on a weekly basis. At the end of each rotation, you will receive an e-mail reminding you to complete Student Evaluations. Direct and timely feedback is important, so please schedule a meeting with your student to discuss evaluations prior to their departure. Typhon tutorials are available under the GATP Resources tab.
