Native Americans, Breaking the Silence
October 7 | 5:30pm
Live via Zoom
Free
Join Amanda Davison on October 7, as she shares her inspirations for writing inclusive curriculum. She will describe her writing and planning process for the Native American Artifacts curriculum. Mrs. Davison will share what her students are learning, which includes how the Paleo-Indians were the first to migrate to what is now known as the United States of America. This was followed by the migration of the Arctic Inuit people (thousands of years ago), The Northwest Chinook (7000 BC), the Native Americans of the Southwest (500 BC), the people of the Plains (1300 AD), The Native Americans in the Northeast (1450 AD), and finally the migration of the people in the Southeast (1700 AD).
As part of the process in each of the lessons, she shows the students on a map where that specific region is, discusses the regions that the tribes settled in, introduces vocabulary and historical background specific to the people or tribes of that area, engages students in Depth and Complexity questions to check for understanding, and discusses the significance of the chosen artifact for the lesson or tribe in that region. The preceding week (every other week), she and the students look closer at one specific tribe from the region they learned about the week before, with a similar lesson progression. The second half of the lesson is again dedicated to creating an artifact that pertains to that tribe. Mrs. Davison will also share things she discovered as she conducted her research and wrote lessons for this unit.
Workshop attendees will gain a deeper understanding of these rich, cultural lessons and leave with ideas about how to implement these concepts into their own classrooms.

Bite-Sized Arts Integration PD
Developing Concentration and Cooperation Skills Through Drama
Bite-Sized Arts Integration PD
Developing Concentration and Cooperation Skills Through Drama
Presented by Kassie Misiewicz of Focus 5
In theater, the success of the show depends on the actors' abilities to concentrate and cooperate. The ideas of integrating improvisation strategies into classroom practice help to build valuable social skills. Improv is a type of theater where the actors make up their characters and dialogue on the spot. They have to cooperate to listen to their partners and concentrate to build a mental list that will help create the detailed scenes.
These techniques can be used from circle time to morning meetings, and are used to build a mutually supportive community with teachers and students. These strategies can be incorporated into the classroom to strengthen development of important social emotional skills. Some techniques that can be used to develop these skills are through mirroring movement,, using slow intentional movements and taking directions from the leader. Other techniques include working in pairs. The leader's job is to make their focal point the follower, move slowly, and take care of the follower. The followers' job is to make their focal point the leader and follow the leader’s movements. Other techniques include the activity of Yes, And! to introduce scaffolding for storytelling. Activity reflections may include: How did your concentration help your class today? What does concentration look like when we are reading? What obstacles are you facing today when concentrating? When cooperating, how did you overcome the obstacles? These techniques can be used throughout the year to create a safe, learning environment community.

What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?
We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Now accepting Submissions from all arts disciplines
Deadline January 15, 2025
Tap to learn more
NOT just for visual artists! This contest also welcomes submissions across ALL arts disciplines. You do not have to be a member of MAEA or any other statewide arts education organization to submit examples of student artwork.
How it Works:
Student work is submitted by the teacher, compiled and submitted to each senator for the final selection process.
K-12 teachers from any arts discipline take high-quality photos of a work or performance. Images are submitted to us, organized by district and sent to each of our 34 State Senators. They view work from their district and select one image to represent them. The chosen images are printed on 12"x16" paper and displayed in frames throughout the year at the Missouri Capitol to advocate legislator support for the arts.
Both the selected student artist and their teacher are honored at the MAEA Legislative Day and MAAEs Fine Arts Education Day.
