Hello, Arts Across the Curriculum Team!
Welcome to our Fall edition of the Arts Across the Curriculum/Arts Centered Education newsletter. The purpose of our quarterly newsletters is to keep you informed of the ongoing creative work of our ACE programs, MAIN Events, as well as areas we have identified for further help in this work. We hope you enjoy this publication and we look forward to future collaborative engagement with you all!
Lauren Hanahan, Kristi Ponder, and Cynthia Williams Phelps, PhD
In this issue, you will find information about upcoming MAIN events, ACE Schools, resources for educators, and how you can help us reach out to potential partners.
Invite your colleagues, arts educators, general classroom teachers, and pre-service teachers to join our MAIN events. Attendees walk away with a deeper understanding of arts across the curriculum, tools for implementation, and opportunities for continued connection with educators across the state. Help us grow our network and share on Facebook and Instagram!
Why Arts Integration? In November, we continue our journey towards a better understanding of Why Arts Integration. Join us November 4 to hear from school administrators as they share why they think arts integration strategies are vital for their learning communities and how they incorporate arts integrated practices into their professional development.
In September, we had the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue with Dr. Wendy Sims, Dr. Michael Smith, and Dr. Tara Plachowski as they shared why they incorporate arts integration strategies into their teaching and why they think it is important for the next generation of teachers. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Kristi and Cynthia will present Elemental Exploration: Integrating the Essential Elements of Art & Music through STEAM at the Missouri Art Education Association Fall conference. Attendees will learn scaffolded lesson ideas to connect and respond to elements of music and art in a creative process. This hands-on experience helps students build confident music listening, artistic behavior skills, and deeper learning connections to science, math, engineering, and technology.
We are continuing our work with the Science cohort at Reed Academy this year. We met with the new principal and discussed possibilities regarding the existing Science cohort and an introduction with the new English Language Arts Cohort.
Shook Elementary will also be continuing with the ACE program this year!
We collaborated with Hazelwood School District to provide teaching artist resources for professional development.
We are currently working on creating and gathering arts integrated lesson plans on our website. This will be available for teachers to use resources to further work with arts integration throughout the state!
Some example lesson plans:
Integrating visual art into high school English
Integrating music into Elementary Science
Integrating music into Elementary Math
3 ways to help us raise money for our ACE programs: grants, volunteer time, donors.
Do you know of a grant that aligns with the mission of Arts Across the Curriculum ?
Are you or anyone you know, interested in volunteering time to help us reach our funding goals?
Are you aware of someone that would donate to our cause?
Let us know and help us reach our goals!
