November, 2024
Thankful for YOU!
As we approach November and the season of Thanksgiving, I wish to express my gratitude to each of you for all that you do to serve Missouri's students. Your role is vital as you use the arts to invest in our future as you help equip students with the skills which lead to their success.
Throughout October MAAE continued to raise visibility for our programming and mission as we attended a number of conferences including the Missouri Art Education Association Fall convening at Knob Noster, the Gifted Association of Missouri conference in Columbia, and the Missouri School Boards Association and Missouri Association of School Administrators in Kansas City. The 2025 Missouri Teachers of the Year honorees annual banquet was another highlight.
A number of Missouri's Fine Arts Leaders gathered in Jefferson City on Oct 2 for professional learning facilitated by DESE's Dr. Kendra Franks and MAAE's Dr. Cynthia Williams Phelps. The group includes arts leaders from schools of all sizes who learn from each other as they explores issues related to the administration of high quality arts programs. The next meeting is set for January 29, 2025 at 2-3pm as part of the Missouri Music Educators Association Conference. Virtual attendance options will be possible. Aspiring and current fine arts leaders are welcome!

In October, Kristi Ponder and I presented Elemental Exploration: Integrating the Essential Elements of Art & Music through STEAM at the Missouri Art Education Association Fall conference. The workshop explored common vocabulary found in music and art, and attendees engaged in mindful listening activities, identified ways to express mood through line and color, created their own instruments, performed in small groups, and examined music & art through a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) lens.
Dr. Kendra Franks, Phyllis Pasley, and I led a Fine Arts Ed Leaders workshop in Jefferson City at the Miller Performing Arts Center on October 2. Fine Arts Directors from around the state gathered to explore the concepts of cultivating curiosity and creativity, professional learning practices, teacher recruitment and retention, apathy and/or expectations of new teachers, course coding, and best practices. An overview of the Arts Education Data Project was also shared. Lunch and facilities fees were provided, courtesy of DESE.
Additionally, Phyllis Pasley and I attended the GAM (Gifted Association of Missouri) conference in Columbia at the University of Missouri. We had the opportunity to visit with gifted educators from across the state and engage in meaningful conversations regarding our Professional Learning offerings and the ACE program.
Thank you! October IDEA: Native Americans, Breaking the Silence. Amanda Davison, Gifted Education Specialist in the Hazelwood School District, shared her inspirations for writing an inclusive curriculum about Native American Artifacts. What is an Arts Centered approach to instruction?
We at MAAE believe that, arts centered education draws on the natural human inclination towards artistic expression to increase engagement and provide alternative access points to academic content. Art integration's multi-modality approach promotes creativity, imagination, innovation, social-emotional learning, and critical thinking, leading to a better understanding of academic content.

Now accepting Submissions from all arts disciplines
Deadline January 15, 2025

NOT just for visual artists! This contest also welcomes submissions across ALL arts disciplines. You do not have to be a member of MAEA or any other statewide arts education organization to submit examples of student artwork.
How it Works:
Student work is submitted by the teacher, compiled and submitted to each senator for the final selection process.
K-12 teachers from any arts discipline take high-quality photos of a work or performance. Images are submitted to us, organized by district and sent to each of our 34 State Senators. They view work from their district and select one image to represent them. The chosen images are printed on 12"x16" paper and displayed in frames throughout the year at the Missouri Capitol to advocate legislator support for the arts.
Both the selected student artist and their teacher are honored at the MAEA Legislative Day and MAAEs Fine Arts Education Day.

MAAE and MCA Survey Results
A research survey regarding ARTS and ARTS EDUCATION
Back in August, in a collaborative partnership with our allies at the Missouri Citizens for the Arts, The Alliance sent a survey out to the Missouri Primary Winners to learn more about their attitudes toward the arts and arts education. Several of those individuals responded to our request for more information which may inform your decision when you vote on November 5, 2024.
A report of the survey results and links to some candidate's individual survey responses may be found on the MAAE Website.

MAAE's Arts Advocacy Efforts

MAAE engages in arts advocacy by providing information and support for local level advocacy, maintaining communication with our colleagues engaged in national level work, and with a variety of arts advocacy work at the state level. From raising visibility, to gathering information and training, much of our work in arts advocacy is at the state level. This includes our signature advocacy programs: Fine Arts Education Day, Senate Student Arts Exhibit, and the Show-Me Arts Summit. Other activities include reporting to our allies about the activities of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the State Board of Education, pending legislation, and changes to administrative rules. We work with our allied organizations such as Missouri Citizens for the Arts, Missouri School Boards Association, and associations which support teachers, (MSTA, MNEA) school administrators, (MASA) principals (MAESP, MoASSP) and more to ensure arts education thrives in Missouri.

Starlight Tech Theatre Training Program

Starlight Theatre recently welcomed the first cohort of high school students to our brand-new tech theatre training program. This hands-on initiative is designed to cultivate the next generation of theatrical professionals by connecting local students with diverse backstage opportunities available right here in Kansas City. The positive response to the program has been inspiring, and we’re grateful for the enthusiastic support from community arts organizations eager to contribute and nurture these budding technicians.
Tech Theatre Training is designed to equip Kansas City area high school students with the skills and training that can lead to a fruitful career in the theatre and entertainment industries. Participants will be trained under the guidance of industry professionals and will be working hands-on in the disciplines of lighting, costuming, hair and makeup, scenic/set design, audio/sound, and video.
Primarily hosted at Starlight Theatre, participants will also have the opportunity to visit and receive instruction from partner arts organizations. Program sessions take place over nine months, and the experience culminates with participants contributing technical elements during a performance, allowing them to see their training come to fruition on Starlight’s stage.

Since January, I have been working alongside Oklahoma A+ Schools Institute to bring A+ Schools to Missouri. This model for whole-school transformation begins with the arts as the key component of an eight-pillar framework known as the A+ Essentials. See chart below!
What I have learned:
A+ Schools professional learning requires a full commitment from each faculty member and leadership. The pd is intense and rewarding. Guided by expert teachers and teaching artists, a summer summit leads a group of educators through lessons and activities to master the eight Essentials, to apply them to their school community, and to develop lessons for their classrooms that honor this framework.
During a training week [Summer Summit] with Oklahoma A+ Schools, I witnessed many aha! moments, collaborations, and lessons planned.
So what now?
Missouri Arts Council believes in the strength of this model. We will provide the funding to implement A+ Schools, which translates into $90,000 of professional learning over three years for each school that makes this commitment.
Talk to me if you are curious about this model. A+ Schools are thriving in North Carolina, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas, and pilot programs are underway in Colorado and Texas. Since 1995, A+ Schools have reported higher achievement, attendance, and satisfaction (student and teacher).

I was selected to present on my doctoral research about curiosity and music educators at the National Association of Music Educators Biennial Research Conference which was on September 26 -28th in Atlanta, GA. Curiosity is more than just asking questions and can be described as functioning within 5 dimensions; creativity is more than a new work of art; the environment, especially the teacher cultivates curiosity and creativity. Want to know more? Please contact me to schedule a presentation with your school, business, or committee group. Also, be looking for an invite to participate in a replication of this study. If we can cultivate curiosity, can we enhance creativity?
