Stories offer readers viewpoints, ideas, and a place to begin conversations. As we approach Black History Month, we would like to take this opportunity to engage thoughtfully and age-appropriately in conversations using stories to drive classroom discussions about people in American history who have made positive contributions to equality, culture, and the wellbeing of all Americans and citizens across the world.
At MNSD, we want to promote all people in our school community and strengthen connections among all constituents. We believe this is possible through the meaningful exchange of stories that highlight examples of how all of us can come together to understand and regard the good in other people. Marple Newtown School District is committed to creating an environment in which each person in Marple Newtown feels as though they belong.
Black History Month celebrates Black Americans’ contributions to society and raises awareness of Black American history. It began when Carter G. Woodson, an American historian, grew frustrated with the underrepresentation of Black people in conversations that shaped American history. Every year, a theme is applied to focus the public’s attention, with this year’s theme centering around “Black Health and Wellness”. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.
