Performing Arts

Performing Arts at the Math and Science Academy is a comprehensive instrumental and general music curriculum that allows students of all musical backgrounds to encounter and explore the musical genre. Instrumental and non instrumental music courses will progress from a general knowledge of music to the beginning, intermediate, and advanced stages of musical performance. Placement within each ensemble is at the discretion of the director. 

23-24 Performing Arts Courses

Intermediate Band

Three (2) to four (3) years of experience.

This ensemble is for the intermediate instrumentalist.  The Ensemble utilizes the method books Sound Innovations Book 2 and Ensemble Development for Intermediate Band. Students will sight-read and perform music at the MSHSL level III or higher, while addressing the theoretical and technical musical concepts appropriate with the National Performing Arts Educational Standards for grades 7-9. These standards address matters such as solo/small/large ensemble rehearsal and performance, theory, terminology, improvisation and composition. 8th and 9th graders will have the opportunity to audition for the Advanced Band at the end of the school year. 7th and 8th grade students, as well as some 9th grade students, with a B or lower, will remain in the Intermediate Band to continue developing their skills in a leadership role. This course does require attendance outside of the school day for performances and does have a course fee.

Advanced Band

Four (4) or more years of experience

This ensemble is for the advanced instrumentalists. The Advanced Band utilizes the method book Sound Innovations - Ensemble Development Advanced Band. Students will sight-read and perform music at the MSHSL levels of Class II and above, while addressing the theoretical and technical musical concepts appropriate with the National Performing Arts Educational Standards for grades 9-12. These standards address matters such as solo/small/large ensemble rehearsal and performance, theory, terminology, improvisation and composition. The Advanced Band does compete in the MSHSL Large Group Contest as well as the MSHSL Solo/Small Ensemble Contest. This course does require attendance outside of the school day for performances and does have a course fee.

Advanced Band for PSEO

PSEO students only

This online course is specifically for those advanced instrumentalists who are PSEO and cannot meet the attendance requirements due to their daily schedule. Through the use of Google Classroom instrumentalists will cover the same material as the curricular course (see Advanced Band). Students are required to attend rehearsal when possible as well as check in with the director as often as possible. This course does require attendance outside of the school day for performances and does have a course fee.

Intermediate Orchestra

Two (2) to three (3) years of experience.

This ensemble is for the intermediate string instrumentalists (does not include guitar). The Ensemble utilizes the method books Sound Innovations Book 2 and Ensemble Development for Intermediate String Orchestra. Students will sight-read and perform music at a grade level II or higher, while addressing the theoretical and technical musical concepts appropriate with the National Performing Arts Educational Standards for grades 7-9. These standards address matters such as solo/small/large ensemble rehearsal and performance, theory, terminology, improvisation and composition. 8th and 9th graders will have the opportunity to audition for the Advanced Orchestra at the end of the school year. 6th- 8th grade students, as well as some 9th grade students, with a B or lower, will remain in the Intermediate Orchestra to continue developing their skills in a leadership role. This course does require attendance outside of the school day for performances and does have a course fee.

Advanced Orchestra

Four (4) plus years of experience.

This ensemble is for the advanced string instrumentalists (does not include guitar). The Advanced Orchestra utilizes the method book Sound Innovations - Ensemble Development Advanced Orchestra. Students will sight-read and perform music at the MSHSL levels of Class III and above, while addressing the theoretical and technical musical concepts appropriate with the National Performing Arts Educational Standards for grades 9-12. These standards address matters such as solo/small/large ensemble rehearsal and performance, theory, terminology, improvisation and composition. The Advanced Orchestra does compete in the MSHSL Large Group Contest as well as the MSHSL Solo/Small Ensemble Contest. Choir

9th-12th  Grade

1.0 credit, year long course

Students will learn vocal technique and  musical concepts as stated in  the National Performing Arts Educational Standards. These standards address matters such as solo/small/large ensemble rehearsal and performance, theory, terminology, improvisation and composition.  This choir sings a variety of music from many cultures and musical styles.  This course does require attendance outside of the school day for performances and does have a course fee.
