Greetings Caregivers,
It was so nice welcoming you into our classroom. Your first and second graders worked very hard on the map of our classroom to include in your welcome note. The family selfie's are fantastic! Thank you for indulging us! We had a terrific visit from the Jericho Fire Department during our school wide assembly, as I am sure you know from the goodie bags that were sent home. I look forward to meeting with you during caregiver/ parent conferences starting next week, and going all day Friday October 24th. There are still many slots available, so please sign up. There are directions further down in this newsletter. Have a relaxing weekend.

Learning Highlights from the Week
Unit 1 Building Numbers and Solving Story Problems
Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System 1
This unit focuses on counting and comparing quantities, connecting counting to the operations of addition and subtraction, and developing an understanding of and strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems via story problems and games. Because it is the first unit, it also introduces the processes, structures, and materials that form the basis of math instruction throughout the year, and establishes the mathematical community. As part of this work, several yearlong classroom routines are introduced that offer regular practice with counting and combining, number composition, developing visual images of quantities, collecting and analyzing data, and working with time. This unit will end in a few weeks. We will move towards unit 3.
Our class has continued to work hard increasing their reading stamina. We can now sustain 10 minutes of focused reading with eyes and minds in our books. We are still recording how many books we read aloud together. We are already at 50! We have been meeting in small groups finally, and get to read more about maps and the difference between fiction and nonfiction books. In November we will start a nonfiction unit called Wild and Endangered Animals. We will become researchers and learn about the special features that nonfiction books offer and what causes animals to be Endangered.
Health Office News
Over the next three weeks, the health office will be conducting hearing and vision screenings for students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 3rd grades, as well as for students receiving special services. Families will be notified if their child does not pass a screening or if additional follow-up is recommended.
Every Friday morning we will focus on one aspect of social and emotional learning. This past week we learned about Kelso the frog and his nine strategies that can be employed independently when faced with a problem. We learned that the size of the problem dictated our response. Mrs. Erickson, our guidance teacher, is helping us to rehearse our thinking about the size of the problem and what options we have to change the outcome.
Fall Conferences
NEW NEWS!
You can now sign up for a conference using your MyPowerHub through Powerschool. Here is a link to sign up in case you don't already have one. Here is a video to help guide you to setting up a conference. I look forward to meeting you and discussing how the beginning of the year is going.
