Bataan Death March

Bataan Memorial Hike & Awards Presentation

On Saturday September 23rd, the Moses Lake High School Air Force JROTC cadets conducted their Bataan Memorial Hike. Cadets started their morning with a 14-mile hike to honor the many American and Filipino men and women who were forced to walk the grueling 66 miles by the Japanese military on April 9th, 1942, from Mariveles to San Fernando, after the Philippine Islands were captured during WWII.

Bataan HIke 2020-2021

The very first Bataan hike for the Moses Lake High School AFJROTC program was a success. Our cadets carried a Prisoner of War flag as they completed the 14 mile hike and were able to enjoy pizza, drinks, and other snacks after. They even had a push-up “contest” after they regained some of their energy. It was definitely a difficult hike and everyone was very tired towards the end, but participants had fun and a good experience overall.

Alondra Cueto Ramirez, one of our JROTC cadets, said that even though she had a hard time completing the hike she was very motivated by everyone else and she’s happy she participated.

Adam Butler, a student joining the program next year said, “It was a good experience and it was a very respectful idea. I think that we got the message across for the respect of the walk to the people of Moses Lake”.

The Bataan Hike was a fun and successful experience overall. We were able to honor the men and women who died during the Bataan Death March in April 1942 and spread our message through the hike. We’re looking forward to next year’s hike.
