Course # 2339
Audience: All Certificated
Location: Vanguard House 1 Seminar 1
Presenter: Annie Kirking
Description: Burnout, emotional exhaustion, and compassion fatigue have long been a part of the experience of many educators, but now (in many ways) they feel deeply imbued in the day to day lives of those teaching and working in our schools and systems - including among our experienced teachers, coaches, and leadership.
What do we mean when we say burnout, emotional exhaustion, and compassion fatigue?
-What are some ways that COVID and all of its impacts have increased the impacts of burnout among educators?
-What are some of unique experiences and consequences of burnout for educators of color?
-Why we can't "self-care" our way out of burnout and what are some things we can do to support the resilience of our novice colleagues, our experienced colleagues, and ourselves.
-What are some ways that all students and educators are impacted by educator burnout even if we do not personally feel burnt out or overextended?
Course # 2363
Audience: All Certificated
Location: MLHS Rm 312
Presenter: Earth Gen
Description: Schools across Washington state deal with stormwater issues such as responding to periods of drought and heavy rain, silt entering storm drains, and runoff. The Stormwater Challenge is a middle school unit supplement that was developed in partnership with Highline and Puyallup school districts to bring watershed and stormwater learning to classrooms through a locally relevant issue with unique adaptations for eastern and western Washington. This resource can be shared in sequential (~15 days) or the lessons can be practiced individually. The unit supplement includes activity outlines, resources, and slide decks.
The Stormwater Challenge poses the problem to students that their communities are and will experience heavier and more frequent rain events due to climate change. Students will explore how these events impact their schoolyard and local environment. They will connect stormwater issues around the state of Washington to their classroom learning then develop and design solutions including low impact design and green stormwater infrastructure to make a change on their school campus. Students will work in small groups and document their learning through a design notebook.
Teachers will participate in learning about the content in all three sections of the Stormwater Challenge, including Water Cycle & Watersheds, Pollution & Solutions, and Design Solutions. Teachers will develop an understanding for this content through lesson reviews and hands-on activities.
Teachers will be eligible for STEM Clock Hours for participation in this session. Teachers will have the option to implement the content and participate in a follow up session via Zoom for an additional implementation stipend.
