Through learning in these domains, students build skills that will help them succeed in higher levels of mathematical learning. Please note that while all of these domains are inherent points of instruction in Grades 1-2, they are not all specifically tested on the MLS. This is done to reflect the design of NYS math curriculum, which recommends providing instruction on certain domains and standards at later points in the year based on sequencing and the progression of domains across grade levels.
For more information about the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Learning Standards for Grades 1-2, please refer to the NYSED website.
In order to accommodate for varying reading skill levels with regard to 1st grade content, MLS Grade 1 math questions also include an audio component. This audio will cover only the written portions of the question that may require higher reading comprehension levels. The audio prompts do not read aloud the equations, numbers, or answer choices. In each drop-down for the example Grade 1 questions, examples have been provided of what the audio would include for the given question.
As with other grade levels, the MLS assesses mathematics skills in Grades 1-2 with a multiple choice format. Since there are no NYS standardized tests for these levels, sample materials for this website have been adapted from archived EngageNY curriculum to match similar questions that students could encounter on the MLS. Materials used in the creation of these sample math items can be accessed through the NYSED website at the following link.
