Course Description: This two-week class allows students to check out and explore Briarcliff Middle School. Students will practice locker combinations, participate in team-building activities including a scavenger hunt, discuss required summer reading, practice Math skills, and learn how to get organized for middle school with materials and Canvas. This class will meet at the high school and involve trips over to Briarcliff.

Course Description: Math 6 Preview introduces students to the concepts of ratios, absolute value, positive and negative numbers, finding common factors and representing points in the plane with negative number coordinates. If time permits, this course will also introduce students to solving real-world problems by writing and solving linear equations.

Course Description: Math 8/Algebra 1 Preview focuses on the most essential New Jersey Learning Standards for Grade 8 and Algebra 1. Students will learn to apply the properties of integer exponents to simplify exponential expressions, use the Pythagorean Theorem to find unknown side lengths of right triangles and distances between points in a coordinate plane, and will extend their knowledge of solving and graphing linear equations. Students are responsible for obtaining a TI-84+ graphing calculator to be used throughout the course. Summer Academy does not provide calculators.

Course Description: Geometry Preview strengthens the mathematical foundation required for success in Geometry.  Students will build upon the skills mastered in the Geometry strand of the New Jersey Student Learning Standards during Grades 6, 7, and 8 and explore the essential concepts of geometric figures and space, inductive and deductive reasoning, and geometric proofsRising 8th graders who wish to take this course for the purpose of advancing to Geometry in 8th grade must have a final grade of 90% or above in Math 7.  Additionally, students must earn a 90% or above in the Geometry Preview course to be approved for advancement into Geometry in 8th grade.

Course Description: The Algebra I Preview course covers a range of algebraic topics grounded through four key ideas: 1.) Seeing structure in expressions, 2.) Arithmetic with polynomials and rational expressions, 3.) Creating equations, and 4.) Reasoning with equations and inequalities. The course challenges students to apply mathematical thinking to various authentic problem-solving tasks. Through this framework, students acquire and apply algebraic skills such as: Interpreting expressions, equations, and functions, applying properties of real numbers, solving linear equations, graphing linear equations and functions, writing linear equations, solving and graphing linear inequalities, and writing and solving systems of equations and inequalities.

Course Description: Destination Imagination is a fantastic program that calls itself the "largest celebration of creativity in the world"! Students in this course will engage in a variety of STEAM based challenges based on the famed international competition. The students will learn collaboration, design principles, creativity and problem solving while having lots of hands-on fun!

Course Description: This one-week course/ensemble is designed for students entering grades 5 to 8. All instruments are welcome, but students must have one full year of experience on their instrument. This course will cover small group lessons, jazz history, jazz theory/improvisation, and full ensemble rehearsals. The program is intended to increase student confidence playing their instrument and knowledge about jazz history and improvisation.
