Civics Course Requirements
Mr. White
Dear Students and Parents,
Please read, sign, and return the following course guidelines by _________. If you have any questions or comments, please call me at 741-6180 ext. 3115.
Grades: Starting in the Fall of 2020 I will be moving from a traditional grading system to a Standards Based Grading (SBG) system. Please see my MHS website for further details of the SBG system. It is very important for students to realize that grades are not given in this class, they are earned. Remember – you must pass Civics in order to graduate. Each student must decide what grade they want and then set about achieving this goal.
Traditional Grading Scale SBG Grading Scale
A = 90-100% 4 = Advanced
B = 80-89% 3 = Proficient
C = 70-79% 2 = Basic
D = 60-69% 1= Below Basic
F = 0-59% 1= Below Basic
Expectations:
Every day, students are expected to attend class on time, participate, give their best effort, and follow the class rules. The class rules are: 1. Be on time 2. Be respectful of yourself and others 3. Come to class prepared – bring your book, binder, and a pen or pencil 4. Stay on task 5. Follow instructions
Homework, Essays, and Quizzes and Tests = 80% of your grade
1. Homework is no longer graded. Almost all homework will be able to be completed in class. However, homework will be the vehicle that students will use to score at least a 2 on their quizzes and tests in order to pass Civics.
2. There will be at least 1 argumentative essay assigned during the semester that will be graded. Students that score less than a 2 on their essay will be allowed to correct them until they score at least a 2.
3. Quizzes and Tests – There is an online quiz that students will take after each Topic Lesson. Tests are given after the completion of each Topic. Students that do NOT score at least a 2 on quizzes and tests will be required to attend an intervention class for additional learning and then when they retake the quiz or test and score at least a 2 then they will return to their regular class to continue their learning.
Civics Experiences = 10% of your grade (Civic Experience Requirements will be waived this year, 2020-21 due to COVID-19)
Each student will be required to complete outside of class Civic Experiences for a total of 12 hours during the semester. See the handout on Civic Experience Guidelines. You may not use other classes (ECE, ROP Medical, etc.) as a Civic Experience.
Final Exam = 10% of your grade
There will be a comprehensive Final Exam.
