What is NGSS?
8th Grade Science will explore a variety of topics in science with an integrated approach. Students will explore Life Science, Earth & Space Science, Chemistry and Physics. These topics will build on topics learned in the 7th grade. The new approach to science, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), is a three dimensional approach to learning science. This method is designed to help students make connections across the disciplines of science, and help them learn to construct ideas from their own questions, research, and observations.

The new three dimensional approach to science is what NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) are all about. The first of those three dimensions are Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI's), which is the content, or what scientists know. The second of the three dimensions, are Science and Engineering Practices (SEP's), which are the behaviors, or what scientists do. Finally, the third of those three dimensions are the Crosscutting Concepts (CCC's), which are patterns and systems that apply across the scientific disciplines, or more simply, what scientists think and link.
