In Readers' Workshop this term, students will move toward higher order thinking skills. These comprehension skills include synthesising, summarising, analysing and evaluating information. Texts that will be investigated include informative texts, poetry and creative writing.
Additionally, this term we wanting students to develop critical thinking and feelings about texts they encounter. To support this, students are engaging in Book Clubs! Students selected their text and will meet each week in their book club group to discuss the text. This is a fantastic speaking and listening opportunity.
In Writers' Workshop this term, students will continue to explore informative writing and various forms of poetry. They will complete an informative assessment on a non-fiction topic of their choice, which will include how to research, summarise and reference from other sources. Their published piece will require them to consider how digital technology can enhance their presentation.
Throughout this term, we will focus on specialist and technical words, and poetry specific figurative language (such as idioms, hyperbole and imagery). We will emphasise the importance of sentence fluency and adding complexity to their sentences. Students are regularly exposed to revising and editing strategies, which they employ in their free writing opportunities each week.
In SpellEx sessions, students will learn about regular and irregular plurals, contractions and abbreviations. They will extend their exposure to various suffixes such as 'ous', as well as spelling combinations such as /dge/ and /tch/. They will also look at less familiar spelling combinations for the /o/ sound.
In Word Study sessions, students will begin by investigating the origin of the English language, including its Latin, Greek, Roman and French influences. They also will look at adding embedded clauses and possessive apostrophes to their writing.
This term in Year 5/6 Maths, we are exploring a range of important number concepts. We are learning to convert between percentages, decimals, and fractions, and understand how they connect. We are also comparing and rounding decimals and finding fractions of a quantity. Through investigations of number properties and patterns in numbers, algebra and accompanying visuals, we are developing a deeper understanding of mathematical relationships. In Measurement and Geometry, students will delve into the world of angles and measurement through hands-on exploration and written consolidation methods.
These topics allow us to build fluency in calculations, understanding of mathematical connections, problem-solving skills in real-world contexts, and the ability to reason through number patterns and relationships.
This term in Health & Wellbeing, students will explore three important Respectful Relationships topics: Help-Seeking, Problem Solving, and Stress Management. These areas are crucial in developing emotional intelligence and building positive, respectful relationships with others both inside and outside the classroom.
Students will also engage in discussions and reflection activities that deepen their understanding of how personal choices and strategies can influence the health, safety, relationships and wellbeing of both individuals and the wider community. This will allow them to think critically about how their actions impact themselves and those around them.
This term, our Inquiry focus is Business & Entrepreneurship. Students will take on the exciting challenge of becoming young entrepreneurs as they begin planning for our first ever Market Day at Mitcham Primary School, which will be held in Term 4. This hands-on project allows students to work collaboratively in teams to develop and run their own business venture. Each team will design a stall to either sell a product, offer a service, or create an experience for all Mitcham students to enjoy.
Through this process, students will explore key business concepts such as profit and loss, budgeting, cost of goods, and marketing strategies. They will learn to think creatively, problem-solve, and make decisions that will impact the success of their venture. We will also delve into the qualities and mindsets that make successful entrepreneurs, such as resilience, innovation, leadership, and risk-taking and students will reflect on how they can develop these attributes themselves.
This unit is an excellent opportunity to integrate real-world maths, economics, communication, and teamwork skills in a fun and engaging way. Students will also be exposed to stories of local entrepreneurs to inspire and guide their journey.
