Creating media – Digital painting
In this unit of work, students will explore the world of digital art and its exciting range of creative tools with your learners. They will have the opportunity to create their own paintings, while getting inspiration from a range of other artists. The unit ends with the students being asked to consider their preferences when painting with, and without, the use of digital devices.
Learning Objective:
To describe what different freehand tools do
I can make marks on a screen and explain which tools I used
● I can draw lines on a screen and explain which tools I used
● I can use the paint tools to draw a picture
Crow class explored the different tools on a digital painting app. They discussed the effects they could get on screen by choosing different brush sizes. They then used these skills to paint a poppy. The students found is difficult at first but loved the challenge and were proud of their results. Are you a digital artist? This is the app they used https://paintz.app/. What will you paint?
Chiff chaff class experimented with the different tools on a digital painting app, Paintz.app. They explored how changing brush sizes could create different effects on their screens. They attempted to create their self-portraits.
Roxana and Dion
"We can take turns!"
Zainab and Mirsab
"This picture does not look like me at all!"
Ilyas and Iyaad
"It is tricky to draw a circle with the trackpad."
Muwada and Zakariya
"I can use the different brushes to paint."
Learning objectives
To use the shape tool and the line tool
● I can make marks with the square and line tools
● I can use the shape and line tools effectively
● I can use the shape and line tools to recreate the work of an artist
Crow class used the line and shape and fill tools to create their own digital painting in the style of Piet Mondrian.
Zael said, "I'm testing out all the tools. This is cool!"
First, they used the line and shape tools to create an outline.
Next, they began to fill their shapes.
Nessie said she really liked the way she had made her rectangles.
The children talked about the shapes they made and their colour choices.
Aadam explored the effect of changing the background colour.
Hamza used primary colours in his design.
Gabriel was focussed on using the track pad. 'It's so much fun!"
A digitally created painting inspired by a great artist.
Learning objectives
To make careful choices when painting a digital picture
● I can choose appropriate shapes
● I can make appropriate colour choices
● I can create a picture in the style of an artist
This lesson introduces learners to a range of shape tools, allowing them to create a painting in the style of an artist
Crow class learned to use a range of shape tools which allowed them to create a painting in the style of Mattise. They also looked at the artists work and created their own interpretations of Matisse’s Snail using the Paintz app and a version using scissors and glue! They thought about which they enjoyed the most. Henri Matisse created his pictures by cutting and ripping paper. The children talked about whether they preferred making their picture on paper instead of using their digital devices. They loved both!
They started by drawing multiple, overlapping squares to create some white space.
Next they began to fill their shapes with colour.
They moved their shapes around to create different effects.
Mahad wanted to create his own interpretations of Matisse’s Snail by using small shapes to create a spiral.
Chikwado used the trackpad to carefully move her shapes into position.
They were able to change the coloutrof their background using the fill tools.
Aadam experimented with the freehand tool to create his own shapes.
Neasa was proud of her finished picture. All the children said it was a lot of fun!
Learning objectives
To explain why I chose the tools I used
I can explain that different paint tools do different jobs
I can choose appropriate painting tools and colours to recreate the work of an artist
I can say which tools were helpful and why
Crow class explored the shape tools to help them create a piece of abstract art inspired by the artist Wassily Kandinsky.
