Computing systems and networks – Technology around us
This unit will develop the students understanding of technology and how it can help them. They will become more familiar with the different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills, and also start to consider how to use technology responsibly
Learning objective: To identify technology
● I can explain technology as something that helps us
● I can locate examples of technology in the classroom
● I can explain how these technology examples help us
During this lesson, Crow class became familiar with the term ‘technology’. They classified what is and what is not technology in their school and classroom. They also were able to demonstrate their understanding of how technology helps us in different ways.
Chiff Chaff class explored the meaning of the term ‘technology’. They identified examples of technology in their classroom and at home, such as computers, iPads, phones and laptops.
Ismail: "We use the sharpener to sharpen the pencils."
Iyaad: "I have a laptop and I use it with my dad."
Mirsab: "The tree is not technology!"
Zainab: "The computer is!"
Cuckoo class had an interesting discussion about what technology is.
"Technology people make to help us, not something that grows in the ground like flowers." - Maryam
Yahya: "Nobody made the sun, so it is not technology. It's in the sky, like the clouds."
Maya: "Mobile phones are technology because you can talk to your friends and watch people dancing."
Suleiman: "I put the tree there because it grew from a seed. It wasn't made by someone. It isn't technology."
Aidan: "I forgot my glasses at home. They are technology, they help me to see clearly. They were made."
Learning Objective: To identify a computer and its main parts
● I can name the main parts of a computer
● I can switch on and log into a computer
● I can use a mouse to click and drag
The students began to learn the main parts of a desktop and Chromebook. They practised turning on and logging in to a computer. They applied their knowledge of the different parts of a computer, to complete a mouse-based task.
Crow class enjoyed practising their trackpad skills with an online jigsaw puzzle game. They managed all the levels! If you would like to try at home, here is the link https://studio.code.org/courses/course1/units/1/lessons/3/levels/1
Kamal
"I tried using the mouse on the class computer but it was too big for my hand. This is better.
Samia and Robbie
"You have to press really hard to make it start to move."
Aisha and Chance
"This is fun and easy for me."
Maryam and Luna
"We are doing them all. It's easy to use. Can we do it some more?"
Chiff Chaff class had fun practicing their trackpad skills by completing most of the levels of an online jigsaw puzzle game. They took turns to solve the puzzles, showing great teamwork throughout the activity.
Nicole and Noah
"This is fun, we did so many puzzles!"
Dion and Ezda
"You have to hold the trackpad down with one finger then it drags the puzzle."
Muwada
"I like this game!"
Fatima and Dominic
"Let's have one turn at a time."
Learning objective: To use a mouse in different ways
● I can use a mouse to open a program
● I can click and drag to make objects on a screen
● I can use a mouse to create a picture
This lesson provided the students with the opportunity to build on the mouse skills acquired in the previous lesson. They reviewed images of a computer to explain what each part does. They also developed an understanding that different computers use different mice, but they perform the same function. They then used a trackpad to open a program and create a simple picture
Crow class explored a painting app to practise their mouse skills. They worked hard to create a simple picture. If you would like to try at home, here is the link. https://paintz.app/
Aadam
"I like it because you can paint on it."
Rafe and Aisha
"It was tricky but fun. You have to press hard on the trackpad."
Mahad
"I could make the lines thick by changing the size of the paintbruch."
Gabriel
"I made a rainbow. You have to be careful. This is fun!"
Learning objective: To use a keyboard to type on a computer
● I can say what a keyboard is for
● I can type my name on a computer
● I can save my work to a file
This week the stsudents began to use the computer keyboard. They learned that writing on a keyboard is called typing and they had a go at typing their name. The students then went on to save their work using the save icon and discovered that this icon is used in lots of different programs.
Crow class enjoyed exploring the keyboard, using the different tools on the app to create images and then typing their names underneath.
Chikwado
"Here is the rubber. Cora rfubbed out the picture."
Aadam
"This is so good!"
Robbie
"I really like doing this."
Luna
"I'm drawing a fox. I love this fox."
The letters are tricky to find.
We take turns with our friends.
Kamal
"I want to draw a smiley face."
Gabriel
"I can do this!"
Learning objective: To create rules for using technology responsibly
● I can identify rules to keep us safe and healthy when we are using technology in and beyond the home
● I can give examples of some of these rules
● I can discuss how we benefit from these rules
In this lesson the students were introduced to the concept of using computers safely, within the context of a school setting. They explored why we have rules in school and how those rules help us. They then applied this understanding to rules needed for using computer technology safely
Neasa
"I have made a poster showing that I am about to safely use my ipad with my cousins."
Cora
"We have to hold computers at the bottom so that you don't drop it. We have to be kind and share the computers."
Isa
"I have drawn friends sharing, taking turns and working together."
Rafe
"I am sharing with my friends because your supposed to share."
