Computing systems and networks – Technology around us
This unit will develop the students understanding of technology and how it can help them. They will become more familiar with the different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills, and also start to consider how to use technology responsibly.
Learning objectives
To identify technology
● I can explain technology as something that helps us
● I can locate examples of technology in the classroom
● I can explain how these technology examples help us
During this lesson, the students became familiar with the term ‘technology’. They classified what is and what is not technology in their school and classroom. They also were able to demonstrate their understanding of how technology helps us in different ways.
Moorhen class at work!
We sorted images into technology and not technology.
It was a surprise that a pencil and a glue stick were examples of technology.
We had to think carefully about some of the examples.
Magpie sorted images, identifying which were examples of technology and which were not examples of technolgy.
We sorted images into technology and not technology.
We sorted images into technology and not technology.
'Technolgy is using a computer to do work'.
Lesson 2: Using technology
To identify a computer and its main parts
● I can name the main parts of a computer
● I can switch on and log into a computer
● I can use a mouse to click and drag
The students began to learn the main parts of a desktop and Chromebook. They practised turning on and logging in to a computer. They applied their knowledge of the different parts of a computer, to complete a mouse-based task.
Moorhen class were able to identify the main parts of a computer and use the trackpad to drag and drop images.
Hannah
"You have to press quite hard and keep pressing to move the puzzle piece."
Musa
Musa found that you had to concentrate to cpmplete the activity.
Rayyan and Noah
Both boys were confident using the trackpad and navigating their way around the programme.
Afrodita and Aadam
The partners helped each other to complete the task.
Magpie class used the teachers to identify parts of computer.
Atarah and Redwan pointing- 'This is the base unit to keep information'
Hussain and Aleksandra- This is the keyboard to write letters and numbers'.
Aayat and Aydin- 'This is the screen to see what we are doing'
Learning objective: To use a mouse in different ways
● I can use a mouse to open a program
● I can click and drag to make objects on a screen
● I can use a mouse to create a picture
This lesson provided the students with the opportunity to build on the mouse skills acquired in the previous lesson. They reviewed images of a computer to explain what each part does. They also developed an understanding that different computers use different mice, but they perform the same function. They then used a trackpad to open a program and create a simple picture.
Moorhen class used the trackpad to create images on a painting app. Here is a link so you can have a go at home:https://paintz.app
Betsan
"I clicked on the pencil tool to make a picture."
Matilda
"You have to press quite hard for the pencil to show."
Mahnisa
Mahnisa kept her eyes on the cursor as she moved it with the trackpad.
Hannah
Hannah used the fill symol to change the background of the screen.
This image was created by using the trackpad to control a pencil. The children confidently explored the tool bar and were able to select different colours.
This image was created by using the trackpad to control a paintbrush. They found that they could change the size of the paintbrush if needed. "It is a frog. The sky is blue and there is a sun."
Gruffallo
"Can I do it have I have Gruffalo claws?"
Yes!
The children in Magpie drew shapes and a flower to practise using a whiteboard pen.
Magpie class tried to draw a triangle and parts of a flower.
Monika and Aydin drew parts of a flower and a square.
Learning objective: To use a keyboard to type on a computer
● I can say what a keyboard is for
● I can type my name on a computer
● I can save my work to a file
This week the children began to use the computer keyboard. They learned that writing on a keyboard is called typing and they had a go at typing their name. The children went on to save their work using the save icon and discovered that this icon is used in lots of different programs.
Moorhen class enjoyed exploring the keyboard and typing their names.
It was tricky finding the key that you wanted.
They practised changing the size of the letters.
They used their mouse skills to move the cursor.
The chilren used the space bar and the return key.
Magpie class
'I tried to save my work' Aydin
I wrote my name on a computer.
'I tried to draw a square' Adam and Alexsandra
'This is a picture of me' Oshawn
Learning objectives
To create rules for using technology responsibly
● I can identify rules to keep us safe and healthy when we are using technology in and beyond the home
● I can give examples of some of these rules
● I can discuss how we benefit from these rules
In this lesson the children were introduced to the concept of using computers safely, within the context of a school setting. They explored why we have rules in school and how those rules help us. They then applied this understanding to rules needed for using computer technology safely.
Moorhen class created posters to show how to use technology safely.
We listen to adults and follow their instructions.
We sit at a table when using a device.
We share our devices.
We make sure there are no drinks near our devices in case they spill.
