General Policies
In this math class, new topics typically build on previous material. Therefore, I ask that you keep current with the class assignments. The best learning experience is one in which you keep pace with the class to aid with deeper understanding. Additionally, engaging in the practice opportunities and reading in a timely manner will provide you with sufficient time to seek help in topics you may struggle with by attending to my student hours or reaching out to your teammates. Remember that while you learn, you will struggle, perhaps even make mistakes, and that is ok! If it makes you feel any better, I always make mistakes!! Don't let that keep you from trying. On the contrary, think of it as a growth opportunity!
Attendance: Attendance in this course is measured by you coming to each lecture, participating in class, asking questions, and completing group work/projects.
Attendance is an important element in your academic success. If you miss a class, you must learn the material covered on the day of your absence and get the homework assignments and other important information. Office hours may NOT be used to repeat lectures given on class days that you missed.
You may be dropped from the class if you fail to meet any of the following attendance requirements:
First-day attendance requirement: You must attend the first day of classes, 1/22/24, from 4~5:50pm.
You are expected to attend regularly by completing assignments and participating in class. You may be dropped from the class if you miss more than four lecture hours. You may also be dropped from the class if you are absent on an exam day. If you are sick or have an emergency on the day of the exam, please let me know on that day or earlier.
Exam Make-Ups: Full-credit makeup exams will be allowed for serious emergencies that can be documented, such as a car accident, birth of a child (if you are one of the parents), or hospitalization. Other circumstances, such as having to stay late at work, getting stuck in traffic, not having a ride, having an illness that is not serious, or not having childcare, may not warrant a make-up for full credit. If you miss an exam for any reason, please contact me immediately.
Homework Assignments: Late assignments might be accepted; however, there will be a late penalty of -5%.

Please email me on a regular basis! I love hearing from my students! Please use the Canvas inbox to email me. You will hear from me within 24 hours, usually much sooner. You can always email me about any questions, concerns that you have, just need to vent or you need 'moral support'. and I will never feel "bugged" by reading your emails. However, please keep in mind that I do not check my emails over the weekends. However, if you email me over the weekend, will get back to you on Monday ASAP!
It is critical that you check your email every other day while taking this class, and it is your responsibility to make sure the email address on SURF and Canvas are correct.
Canvas assignments (homework/quizzes) are a key component of this course. All of them are opportunities to dive deeper into the course content, make sure that you're using correct mathematical notations, and share your experiences in the course with both myself and with your teammates. I am looking forward to discussing these topics with you and learning from you as you share your experiences as well.

Once again, attendance is essential to your success in this course. Attendance in this course is measured by you coming to each lecture by turning on your webcam where I can see your physical face (not a photo of your face), completion of group work/projects. By communicating with me early and often, I can make sure you have all the resources you need to complete this course.
Dropping the Course

If you choose to drop the course, you can do this through SURF. If you do not complete this by the deadlines listed in the catalog, you will receive a failing grade. Before dropping the class, please see your counselor!
Academic Honesty
Academic Honesty
MiraCosta College requires reporting of ALL instances of academic dishonesty as Academic Integrity Violations. These include:
copying another student’s homework and submitting it as your own
bringing in and using notes or supplemental materials when none are allowed
submitting work or information from an internet source as your own material (without noting it as a reference/resource)
allowing another student to copy your work and submit it. To avoid this, don’t give your work to someone else. Working together means sharing ideas and discussing concepts, and is acceptable; each student must independently write their own solutions and responses.
Exams
Exams
Students are expected to work by themselves and may not seek help from another person or the internet in any way; submitting the exam indicates that the student is claiming the work submitted is their own and does follow this policy. If I doubt that the work submitted is yours, I will arrange for an oral exam where a new set of questions will be asked - this will give students a chance to clarify any concerns from the instructor about the work that was submitted. Should concerns arise about the work being from someone else, not the student who submitted, alternative questions will be asked verbally so the student can demonstrate their understanding of the concepts and procedures. Academic dishonestly will result in a grade of 0 on an exam.
