MiraCosta College | MATH 131| Online | Course Number 2636 | 1/24/22 - 5/27/22
In this math class, new topics typically build on previous material. For that reason, I ask that you keep current with the class assignments. The best learning experience is one in which you keep pace with the posted due dates to aid with deeper understanding. Additionally, engaging in the practice opportunities and reading in a timely manner will provide you with sufficient time to seek help in topics you may struggle with by attending to my office hours or reaching out to your teammates. Keep in mind that while you learn you will struggle, perhaps even make mistakes and that is ok! If it makes you feel any better, I make mistakes ALL THE TIME!! Don't let that keep you from trying, on the contrary think of it as a growth opportunity!
Homework assignments must be completed with a 70% or higher in order to take your quizzes. You are permitted to work on your homework as many times as you wish until the due date. That means you can get 100% on every homework assignment. Your highest grade will be used in your grade computation. You can continue to work on your homework after the due date, until the first day of the exam is given. However, you will incur a late penalty (-10%).
For quizzes, you have only 3 chances to take each quiz on MyLab Math. Please make sure that you click on the quizzes when you’re ready to complete and submit them. Your highest grade out of 3 tries will be used in your grade computation. You can continue to work on your quiz a day after the due date. However, you will incur a late penalty (-10%).
You can print homework assignments but you must still submit your answers online.
In MyLab Math, you have access to the electronic version of the textbook and lecture videos.
Use the “Video”, “eText”, or “Discussions” options when you need help with a homework problem. Please note that not all questions might have the “video” option. If you are having difficulty with a lot of the exercises, it’s best to go to tutoring or office hours.
Attendance: “Attendance” in this online course is measured by your completion of online work. You may be dropped from class if you fail to meet any of the following attendance requirements:
First-day attendance requirement: you must create an account and log onto MyLab Math to submit your introduction and Intro to MyLab Math by Monday, August 23rd, at 11:59 pm.
You are expected to “attend” regularly by completing assignments online. If you fail to be present in those environments for five days in a row, you may be dropped from the class. You are expected to log on and work at least three times per week unless you are ahead.
You may also be dropped from class if you do not take an exam during the testing window. If you have any difficulties scheduling a testing appointment or showing up to take your test, please email me immediately.
Exam Make-Ups: Full-credit make up exams will be allowed for serious emergencies that can be documented such as a car accident, birth of a child (if you are one of the parents), or hospitalization. Other circumstances such as having to stay late at work, getting stuck in traffic, not having a ride, having an illness that is not serious, or not having childcare may not warrant a make-up for full-credit. If you miss an exam for any reason, please contact me immediately.
Canvas Assignments: late assignments will be accepted, however, there will be a late penalty.
Please email me on a regular basis! I love hearing from my students! Please use the XYZ inbox or Canvas inbox to email me. You will hear from me within 24 hours, usually much sooner. You can always email me about any questions, concerns that you have, just need to vent or you need 'moral support'. and I will never feel "bugged" by reading your emails. However, please keep in mind that I do not check my emails over the weekends. However, if you email me over the weekend, will get back to you on Monday ASAP!
It is critical that you check your email every other day while taking this class, and it is your responsibility to make sure the email address on SURF, Mylab Math, and Canvas is correct.
Canvas assignments are a key component of this course. All of them are opportunities to dive deeper into the course content, make sure that you're using correct mathematical notations, and to share your experiences in the course with both myself and with your teammates. I am looking forward to discussing these topics with you and learning from you as you share your experiences as well.
The semester goes quickly and life happens! For that reason, it's really important to log in multiple times per week and keep up with the material. It helps to do a little every day if possible. Don't leave assignments until the last minute! Please communicate with me if you know you will be absent from the online environment for more than 2 days, and let's work together to ensure that you can stay on track.
My Virtual (Zoom) Happy hour is MW: TBA or by appointment. Please message me to let me know when you would like to meet.
Attendance is essential to your success in this course. In our online class, your attendance is based on logging onto MyLab Math at least 3 time a week, and participating in the weekly "Canvas Assignments" (participation) and completion of assignments. Please log in to the class early and often so that you can stay on top of the assignments and readings for the week. This is particularly important during the first week of class. If you have not logged in or completed the first week’s assignments by the deadline, I am required to drop you from the course as a “No Show”; this also gives other students the ability to join the class from the waitlist. Please make sure you complete the assigned readings and assignments as early as your schedule allows that week. In the event you miss four or more assignments prior to the drop or withdrawal dates, that is considered excessive absences in the online environment, and I may need to drop you from the course.
By communicating with me early and often, I can make sure you have all the resources you need to complete this course.
If you choose to drop the course, you can do this through SURF. If you do not complete this by the deadlines listed in the catalog, you will receive a failing grade. Before dropping the class, please see your counselor!
MiraCosta College requires reporting of ALL instances of academic dishonesty as Academic Integrity Violations. These include:
copying another student’s homework and submitting it as your own
bringing in and using notes or supplemental materials when none are allowed
submitting work or information from an internet source as your own material (without noting it as a reference/resource)
allowing another student to copy your work and submit it. To avoid this, don’t give your work to someone else. Working together means sharing ideas and discussing concepts, and is acceptable; each student must independently write their own solutions and responses.
Students are expected to work by themselves and may not seek help from another person or the internet in any way; submitting the exam indicates that the student is claiming the work submitted is their own and does follow this policy. If I doubt that the work submitted is yours, I will arrange for an oral exam where a new set of questions will be asked - this will give students a chance to clarify any concerns from the instructor about the work that was submitted. Should concerns arise about the work being from someone else, not the student who submitted, alternative questions will be asked verbally so the student can demonstrate their understanding of the concepts and procedures. Academic dishonestly will result in a grade of 0 on an exam.
Often referred to as "netiquette," here is a gentle reminder of the interaction practices and rules we'll follow in all our interactions in this course.
If you ever feel that someone is not following these rules, please send an email to me using the MyLab Math Inbox and describe your concerns.
