I know that getting good grades can sometimes be stressful. To help reduce that stress and improve the likelihood of getting your best grades, allow yourself the time and space you need to do your best work. Don't procrastinate, and if you get stuck on an assignment, reach out to me or one of your peers. I welcome your questions and I'm happy to help you think through your ideas so you can successfully complete an assignment. You know how to reach me, right? I'm sure you're sick and tired of seeing my email address in this syllabus by now. But just in case.... please email me at lnakamura@miracosta.edu .

Three exams and one final exam will be given. You must take your exams on the dates/times below. To prepare, students should review the assigned reading, homework questions, lecture notes, and the Practice Exams. Exams will be proctored in my Virtual Office in Canvas. You must schedule exams during given windows. Please contact me right away if you cannot take your exam on the given dates/times given below. I'll be more than happy to accommodate you.
Please note that all exams are 90 minutes, except for the final exam (2 hours).
Homework is designed as practice and a key may be provided for you to check your own work. Practice writing the homework out with the notation shown in class (lecture videos). It is much better for your understanding of the concepts to stay on top of the homework; budget time each day to study and/or review. Sometimes, homework will take less time and more time could be spent reviewing the concepts. Homework is designed as practice. Homework will be submitted online on MyLab Math.
Quizzes are designed as showing your understanding of the material covered up to date. You can think of it as a practice taking your exam. Make sure to go over the problems you missed and understand where you went 'wrong'. Quizzes will be submitted online on MyLab Math.
There will be frequent Canvas assignments, including video presentations, discussion boards. This is where I will be able to make sure you are clearly showing proper notation and understanding of the material. This entails defining all variables, showing all calculations, including diagrams, and providing several clear, complete, grammatically correct sentences explaining your solution. Such sentences can be either mathematical notation, English language, or a combination of both. Presentation also counts and solutions must be presented in the order in which they are assigned. Final answers should be neatly circled or boxed. Or I may ask you to team up with some of your classmates to work on problems together and post your team's solutions.
You can earn extra credit on each exam by turning in your completed written exercises. As the exams are written (not MyLab Math computer questions), this will give you valuable practice for taking exams. The written problems are listed by section in WEEKLY MODULES in Canvas. Most of the homework is completed within MyLab Math, so each section has only 5-8 written problems. To receive extra credit, each of the following rules must be met:
1) EVERY assigned problem must be attempted. An incomplete assignment will not be granted extra credit!
2) All work must be shown.
3) The problems must be in order and presented neatly.
4) I must receive the scanned (or photos) assignment in an e-mail (lnakamura@miracosta.edu) or submit it via Canvas by the due date below. Late submissions will not be granted extra credit!
