As we wrap up these training prompts and materials and prepare to meet together to do our work, it is worth considering how our decisions coordinate with our colleagues across California's Community College system .
One important resource that has been created for us by our colleagues who lead the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) is the Local Senates Handbook.
For the purposes of this training, please click into the Handbook and look for sections that feel salient and relevant to your current questions and interests as a member of the Academic Senate. Please explore the other sources per your interests. Please prepare insights and inquires to share with your colleagues.
The Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) offers materials from past events available for free, including publications, presentations, and other resources. The ASCCC also hosts bi-annual Plenary sessions, and has established liaison roles for local academic senates (see MiraCosta's current ASCCC liaisons).
MiraCosta College is a dues paying member of the ASCCC. Our dues help fund services the ASCCC performs on behalf of all local Academic Senates. "These services include: local senate visits, technical assistance visits, presentations, publications, the Rostrum (ASCCC’s quarterly publication), plenary sessions that educate faculty and allow college leadership to collaborate and govern; and state-level representation to the Board of Governors and Consultation Council." These dues are "calculated based on the sum of your college’s “Tenured” and “Academic Temporary” full-time equivalent faculty (FTEF) numbers" and are payed for by the college on the Senate's behalf.
If you feel we could benefit from these services directly to address a current issue or topic, contact the Senate President who can coordinate with ASCCC.
The Fair Political Practice Commission (FPPC) provides guidance and training to “promote the integrity of state and local government in California through fair, impartial interpretation and enforcement of political campaign, lobbying and conflict of interest laws.” For instance, AB1234 Local Ethics Training is a 2 hour online training provided by the FPPC. Must create a login to access.
Resources are needed that facilitate knowledge and practice for addressing microaggressions and applying a race-conscious lens to reevaluating systemized procedures
