Can siblings of my Journey student attend Edison?
Can siblings of my Journey student attend Edison?
Every effort is made to try to accommodate sibling enrollment. Two main factors that go into this decision include current grade level enrollment at Edison and grade level of Journey student entering the program*.
*Sibling enrollment for new 5th grade Journey students is not available, due to being enrolled for only one academic year.
Will my child be able to join orchestra or band?
Absolutely! The band and orchestra teachers have been supportive by scheduling lessons around our PACE schedule.
Journey students have the option to join band and/or orchestra, like other Minot Public 4th & 5th grade students.
Can my Journey/PACE student attend CLC?
Yes. Both Journey and PACE students are able to attend the Edison CLC. We have a wonderful CLC program led by Mrs. Regina Alford. She is organized and plans engaging activities for the students.
If you have questions specific to the Edison CLC, please call Mrs. Alford at 701-857-4606.
Can a student be exited from the program?
This is not common and we do not take a program exit lightly. Any decisions to withdraw from gifted programming are made after communication has been made between parent, teacher, and administration.
Is bussing available?
Students who live on the Minot Air Force Base are bussed to Edison.
Families who live in town are responsible for getting their Journey/PACE students to and from Edison.
Does my child have to retest for services every year?
No. Students are monitored through classwork and district achievement tests (STAR). Currently, all MPS students in 2nd and 4th grade are given the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screener. This is not used to exit the program, but gives us some insight on whether the program is what your child needs.
Does gifted education continue in middle school?
Minot Public Middle Schools challenge students through advanced classes in Math and Reading/Language Arts. Like all Minot Public School teachers, middle school teachers meet weekly to discuss the needs of their students. Students may or may not be in the same classes as their elementary classmates.
What is the benefit of my child learning with other students who are gifted?
Communication and collaboration are vital to developing our 21st century skills. When gifted children have the opportunity to interact with like minded peers, they have the chance to hone their social skills. Being able to share interests, level of knowledge, and passions is a valuable experience.
