Students in Meadow Drive have numerous opportunities to practice becoming global citizens. They have hands on learning experiences in order to understand that their place in the world matters and they can have a positive impact on our world at any age. Below are some examples of how our students contribute positively to a global society.
Every year our 2nd graders have the opportunity to work closely with a non-profit organization called Operation Splash. We start each year with a kick off assembly where volunteers come to talk to our scientists about the best practices in minimizing storm drain run-off pollution. We adopt a storm drain near our school and collect data monthly about various debris that we find at the drain. We end the year with a boat trip out of Freeport to see where some of the storm drain water ends up and we go on a marina scavenger hunt. This trip is a favorite amongst our students and they learn how to contribute positively to society by being conscious of their decisions and they try to educate others about the importance of keeping our environment as clean as possible.
Our entire school participates in Pennies for Patients which is a fundraiser supported by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students learn about leukemia and various blood disorders and are asked to join the hero squad to collect as much change as they can over several weeks. Students learn empathy, leadership skills, and work together with their parents and school community to contribute positively to those affected by leukemia and lymphoma.
I am very lucky to be able to see every single student in our building and get to form relationships with each and every one of them. Cultivating these close relationships with students and family members help connect me to the Mineola community.
Every year each grade has the opportunity to Skype a Scientist. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about different careers in science. The Skype session is interactive and students have the opportunity to ask questions as well. The picture above is from last year when we Skyped an Avian Biologist who studies wood duck ducklings!

Meadow Drive's TEDEd Club is in its 3rd year. This is an amazing opportunity for our 2nd graders because it gives them an opportunity to share their voice and their passion to a larger crowd. Students find a topic that they are passionate about. Over a 13 week period, students research and learn key skills on presentation literacy. The students in this group absolutely adhere to Mineola's mission statement on contributing positively to a global society. These 2nd graders realize that there is a wider world out there and their voice and opinion can make a positive different.

Twitter has acted like a window into my classroom. As a special area teacher I wanted to make sure that the families of my young scientists feel connected all year round. I have had lots of positive feedback from parents who love to see what their children are doing in STEAM.
The mission of the Mineola Union Free School District is to inspire each student to be a life-long learner, pursue excellence, exhibit strength of character and contribute positively to a global society.
