Why DVAM? Here are the facts:
Current estimates indicate that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men will experience physical violence in their lifetime.
The majority of those experiencing harm do not report abuse.
In the United States, each year 1,500 lives are lost due to domestic violence homicide.
When children witness domestic violence, they are more likely to experience violence in relationships later in life.
Teen-dating violence increases the likelihood that an individual will experience IPV in adulthood.
How to Support Survivors:
Be a safe person. Check in with friends, listen without judgement. Don't "should-on" those experiencing violence.
Share resources widely via emails, texts and social media.
Engage in violence prevention efforts with students and families. Talk about healthy relationships and boundaries with students - not talking about it keeps violence isolated and this causes increased harm.
