Transition to the Next Step of Your Life

Before  you  know  it,  you'll  be  ready  to  move  on  to  whatever  comes  next!  So there  is  no  time  like  now  to  start  planning.  What  will  that  be  for  you?  Will  you  attend  college  or  participate  in  an  apprenticeship  program? Are  you  ready to  look  for  a  job?    Do  you  need  mobility  training?  Do  you  have  a  driver's  license  or  a  state  ID?  Have  you updated  your  resume?   Do  you  need  to look into guardianship?  No  matter  what  you  have  planned,  the  MPS  Special Education  staff  is  excited  to  help  you  get  ready  for  your  future!  Check out  the  resources  listed  in  this  site,  and  contact  your  school  Transition Coordinator  or  IEP  teacher  for  more   assistance .

Check out the new Transition Community Map to see what resources are near your school, in your neighborhood, or are just great resources to help you transition to the next step of your life.

...transition is helping students with disabilities and their families think about their life after high school and identify long-range goals designing the high school experience to ensure that students gain the skills and connections they need to achieve these goals .”

-Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction

Post Secondary Transition Planning focuses on three areas.  Click the links to learn more about each of the three areas:

Postsecondary education and training for students who are interested in receiving training or additional education to prepare for their career. Postsecondary education options include: public/private universities, community colleges, career/technical schools, vocational/trade schools, centers for continuing education, campus transition programs, and apprenticeship programs.

Preparing for employment after high school can be exciting if you have a  plan in place. MPS provides many opportunities for high school students to gain valuable work experience. These work experiences will put students on the path to gaining and maintaining employment after high school  in a field that is aligned with their skills, interests, and abilities.

Turning 18 and graduating from high school means that you are now ready to move out and live independently. Do you have the skills and resources that you need to help you?  There are numerous community resources that can assist students in planning for, and living, an independent life... Independence First, the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Milwaukee County, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) and more!
