I began my educational career as a teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools at Maryland Avenue School in August of 1996, teaching almost every grade - K4 through 8th. Other schools I have served are Engleburg Elementary, Fairview and host of summer school sites. In addition, I have worked as a Reading Intervention Teacher, Literacy Coach and School Support Teacher, all roles building capacity in teachers, as well as supporting teaching and learning. I’ve earned a BA in Education at Alverno College, a MA at Mount Mary College in Reading and a second MA in Educational Leadership from Alverno College. I am a committed life-long learner, who keeps current with the latest scientifically-based and researched trends in education. I have a special interest in visual and performing arts. I’m also fluent in American Sign Language.
Building positive relationships with students and their families is important to me. I intentionally connect with students on a personal level so that I can best support and guide them, by delving into their interests and helping them realize future possibilities. I believe that educating the whole child and affording them opportunities to become their best selves is vital to their development.
My motto is for students is “It’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish…and DO FINISH… STRONG!!” I want student to know that persistence and resilience pay off.
Dean of Students
My name is Mr. S. Shelton, Dean of Students of Morse Middle School. My bachelor's degree is in Criminal Justice, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude in the year 2011 from Marian University. I have worked 20 plus years tirelessly, advocating for youth, students and young adults in the areas of self-motivation, conflict resolution, de-escalation tactics, court ordered programs and alternatives to juvenile delinquent behaviors. I have a passion for reaching our young men and young women to be the best they can be socially, emotionally and mentally. I started my journey with Milwaukee Public Schools in August 2017, as the Dean of Students after working 17 years with a non-profit organization named Running Rebels. My model for reaching children, students and young people is “never give in to the stigma of a negative society” but realize you can make it through anything that you set your heart out to do. My passion and duties within my school community are many, however I maintain the number one goal of creating, implementing, and providing a culture and climate so students can and will learn at all cost. My heartfelt desire always is to build trust and positive relationships with students so that seeds of growth are planted throughout their lives and within their futures.
