3rd Grade - "Speed Dating" Reading Reports

Students in 3rd grade share reading reports in a "speed dating" format. Exciting way to share book reports and engage with text and other students!

3rd Grade - Close Read

Join this Grade 3 class at Curtin as they begin a Close Read using an interdisciplinary science article on plants. On Day One, the students begin their initial read of the text demonstrating how to use annotation and work collaboratively in small groups. Note how time in text, helps students begin to answer the text dependent question "How do parts of a plant work together as a system to help it survive?"


4th Grade - Debate

After studying Cesar Chavez, these 4th Grade students at Hampton School enter into a debate on the pros and cons of unionized labor. With each argument, students are able to back up their stance with multiple points of evidence demonstrating their knowledge and research on the topic. Note how debating requires students to read, write, speak and listen to the Grade 4 standards.

4th Grade - Poetry

Join this Grade 4 class as they use words and phrases to convey ideas precisely CCSS. 4.3A. Note how the Learning Intention guides the lesson, the anchor charts provide support, and configuring students into small groups encourages them to cooperate and collaborate. With thoughtful planning, this lesson strengthens students Language, Writing, and Speaking and Listening skills in one lesson.

5th Grade - Context Clues

In this video, students will focus on Anchor Standard #4-Vocabulary. Note how the teachers uses the Learning Intention and Success Criteria to keep the lesson focused and aligned to the standards. Her use of open ended questions provide a formative assessment of what students gleaned from watching the instructional video. The lesson also reminds us of the sequence in which the standards ask us to teach the meaning of unknown words. Use 1) context clues 2) investigate word parts, and then, 3) consult reference materials (dictionaries, etc.)

5th Grade - Innovative ELA
