Definition

Grief is a natural response to any loss, including loss of a loved one, loss of a pet, loss of a job, loss of a relationship, or loss of a home.

Typical Experiences

  • Crying

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Lack of energy

  • Changes in appetite

  • Withdrawing from social relationships

  • Questioning religious beliefs or life choices

  • Feeling anger, guilt, loneliness, or sadness but still feeling moments of joy and happiness

Emotional Symptoms of Grief

  • Episodes of rage

  • Inability to focus on anything but the person or object lost

  • Drug or alcohol use

  • Excessive risk-taking behavior

  • Suicidal thoughts or actions

Seeking Support

  • Turn to friends and family members.

  • Accept that many people feel awkward when trying to comfort someone who’s grieving.

  • Draw comfort from your faith.

  • Join a support group.

  • Talk to a therapist or grief counselor.

  • Face your feelings.

  • Express your feelings in a tangible or creative way.

  • Try to maintain your hobbies and interests.

  • Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel, and don’t tell yourself how to feel either.

  • Plan ahead for grief “triggers.”

  • Look after your physical health.
