Definition
Grief is a natural response to any loss, including loss of a loved one, loss of a pet, loss of a job, loss of a relationship, or loss of a home.
Typical Experiences
Crying
Difficulty sleeping
Lack of energy
Changes in appetite
Withdrawing from social relationships
Questioning religious beliefs or life choices
Feeling anger, guilt, loneliness, or sadness but still feeling moments of joy and happiness
Emotional Symptoms of Grief
Episodes of rage
Inability to focus on anything but the person or object lost
Drug or alcohol use
Excessive risk-taking behavior
Suicidal thoughts or actions
Seeking Support
Turn to friends and family members.
Accept that many people feel awkward when trying to comfort someone who’s grieving.
Draw comfort from your faith.
Join a support group.
Talk to a therapist or grief counselor.
Face your feelings.
Express your feelings in a tangible or creative way.
Try to maintain your hobbies and interests.
Don’t let anyone tell you how to feel, and don’t tell yourself how to feel either.
Plan ahead for grief “triggers.”
Look after your physical health.
