The Community Service Learning Program at Milton High School was implemented during the 1996-97 school year in order to develop and instill in all students a sense of citizenship, community, and the responsibilities that good citizens demonstrate by giving back to the community. Each student at Milton High School will be required to fulfill 15 hours of active service to the community each year in order to graduate. Students who transfer into the school will be responsible for the requirement on a prorated semester basis.
At Milton High School, we believe every student has the capacity to make a positive impact. Our commitment to service is woven into the fabric of our school, extending beyond the classroom to our Athletic programs and Clubs. These experiences empower students to explore their passions and discover their strengths and develop valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and empathy.
We encourage all of our students to engage in these opportunities and make a positive difference in the world. Students earn a sense of empowerment by engaging in community service where they are needed, valued, respected, and make real contributions.
A community service experience must be an active experience that benefits the Milton High School community, the community at large, or the global community. The service may not result in a student receiving money or a stipend for the service performed. If a student has a question about a proposed activity, they should consult their school counselor. The MHS principal has the final say if there is a dispute over acceptability.
Examples of service may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Tutoring peers or younger students
Service through religious affiliations
MHS club-sponsored service activities
Park clean-ups and Park & Recreation activities
Assisting the elderly, disabled, or homeless
Volunteering in the Arts (theater, museums, music)
Animal or environmental conservation
Advocacy or political campaigning
Working with social service agencies (VNA, Head Start, etc.)
Fundraising for charity (walkathons, road races)
Coaching, Special Olympics, sports clinics
