Homework in 5th grade typically consists of finishing classwork and/or studying for tests. Students will have a study hall time each day to ask questions and get work done. Homework on the weekend is possible, although I do try to limit it. I do not send home a weekly newsletter, but we will fill out agenda/planner books together each day to manage the work, stay organized and be prepared. The planners should come back and forth to school each day! Remember, just forgetting to do five assignments in one week will warrant a detention, so stay on top of things!
I will be grading students in the following subject areas in 5th grade: reading, math, spelling, language arts (english), science, and social studies. Art, music, and skills & development will also be on the report cards. Though it's an elective, band is also a graded class. We will again be on trimesters (three, 12-week grading periods).
Throughout the course of the year, students will also be required to do three large book reports (one each trimester), as well as some other bigger projects, so be on the lookout!
FYI.. Points are deducted from assignments each day that they are late. I also take off a point on papers that don't have names. Also, one point will be deducted for every two words that are misspelled on an assignment for spelling, reading or language arts. Finally, if an assignment is 50% or below, a student can correct and return it, the following day, for an average grade.
