Letters of Recommendation
Writing an exceptional letter of recommendation is a time consuming process, but helping students achieve opportunities outside of the classroom -- studies abroad, internships, employment opportunities, or graduate program applications -- is an amazing aspect of my role as professor. If you would like me to write you a letter of recommendation, then please take the following steps:
- Read all of the following information & provide me a request for a letter THREE WEEKS prior to the submission deadline.
- Send me an email of your request with a brief description of the opportunity & what is asked from me as a letter-writer. I will let you know in response whether I think I can provide you a "strong", "average", or "weak" letter based upon my experiences with you both inside and outside the classroom. Do note that these categories may not correlate perfectly with grades you have received in previous classes. It reflects more about my ability as a professor to speak to your skills & abilities.
- Afterward, if you decide to continue with me as your letter-writer, then send the following:
- Details Sheet: with the (1) Deadline for the letter; (2) a note of whether a form must also be filled out; (3) the specific program--with links if possible--to the program or position;
- Information sheet about you: Some of the best letters have specific evidence about you the applicant, so help me learn about you or remind me of what I know about you;
- Your resumé or curriculum vitae;
- All recommendation forms that are provided by the opportunity, if there are any; and
- At least one exemplar class assignment from my class.
- Please send one reminder a week prior to the deadline.
- Please let me know if you got the position or are looking for others! Some feedback about your progress is helpful!
Also - any letter I write makes it easier to write future letters. So, you should follow the above steps but with at least a week (7-days) in advance. Good luck on ALL your aspirations!
