Parent Letter
September 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians and Student:
It is with great excitement that I would like to welcome your child to their reading group! We have a lot to look forward to this school year, and I cannot wait to begin!
Our goal at L.A.D.S.B.S. is to provide quality and specialized reading instruction in order to support classroom lessons and strategies. Depending on your child’s needs, their READ 180 instruction may include decoding, fluency, and/or comprehension strategies as well as exposure to essential vocabulary, writing, and test-taking strategies. Students are chosen to participate in the reading program based on teacher recommendation, classroom reading performance and/or reading assessments.
Making time to read every day is crucial to a child’s success in reading. Reading can include something as simple as directions, signs on the road and recipes to chapter books, picture books, newspaper articles, magazines, poems, etc. Aiding children in finding reading material that is of interest to them is the first step to helping your child become an avid and enthusiastic reader. Audio books are available at your public library to model accuracy and fluency while reading. Between modeling and working closely with your child, it is my hope to create a plan so that they can succeed and feel confident as a reader both inside and outside of the classroom.
I truly look forward to a successful and rewarding school year with you and your child, as a team. Please feel free to contact me via e-mail at jhaggert@millerplace.k12.ny.us or leave a message in the front office at (631) 474-2719. *Please send your child into reading with a two-pocket folder and a marble notebook. It is greatly appreciated and a part of them feeling confident and prepared *
Sincerely,
Jamie Haggerty Reading Specialist
