Helping your child at home:
Research shows that reading every day helps children build reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary. When your child reads at home, here are some questions/discussion topics you might want to ask/discuss with them.
Does this remind you of something? (make a connection)
What do you think will happen next? (make a prediction based on what you have read so far and/or the text features)
Why did this author write this? (author's purpose)
How does this new information connect with what I already know? (questioning)
Do this make sense? Do I need to reread? (monitoring)
Make a movie in your mind of what is happening. (visualizing)
What are the most important (central) ideas? (summarizing)
What is the theme (life lesson) that you can take from this story?
How is the main character in this story like another character you've read about? How are they different?(compare and contrast)
How is the main character acting as well as reacting to events in the story? What trait might you give them? (characterization)
How does the setting affect the plot of the story? (setting)
